Artificial Intelligence played a significant role in supporting the development of this project. Different AI tools were used for different stages of the design process, allowing me to explore ideas more efficiently and from multiple perspectives. Claude AI contributed primarily to site and environmental analysis by identifying climatic opportunities, environmental constraints, passive design strategies, and sustainability considerations that were not fully addressed in the original proposal. This helped me gain a deeper understanding of how the project could better respond to the mangrove environment and tropical climate of Port Dickson.
ChatGPT contributed to concept development and design evaluation. It provided critical feedback on the relationship between Andy Warhol’s artistic philosophy and the architectural concept, helping me strengthen the idea of Serial Progression and improve the connection between concept, form, and user experience. It also assisted in identifying opportunities to refine circulation, spatial sequencing, and architectural expression.
DALL·E supported the visualization stage by generating architectural images that helped communicate atmosphere, materiality, spatial character, and design intentions. The visual outputs allowed me to imagine possibilities that would have been difficult to communicate through drawings alone. Overall, AI accelerated research, generated alternative perspectives, and encouraged further exploration throughout the design process.
Despite its usefulness, AI was unable to fully understand the personal intentions, emotions, and design priorities behind the project. While it could analyze information and generate recommendations, it could not determine which design direction best represented my own architectural vision.
AI also struggled with subjective aspects of design. Architecture is not only about solving problems but also about creating meaningful experiences, responding to cultural context, and expressing personal interpretation. These qualities require human understanding and cannot be generated solely through data or algorithms.In addition, AI could not independently evaluate whether a suggestion was appropriate for the project without human review. Many recommendations required interpretation, adaptation, or rejection based on project goals and design intentions.
Several limitations became apparent while working with AI tools. Some responses were repetitive, overly general, or disconnected from the specific conditions of the project. In many cases, prompts had to be refined multiple times before useful outputs were produced.Image generation tools also presented challenges. Although the visualizations appeared realistic, they sometimes included architectural features that were impractical, structurally unrealistic, or inconsistent with the actual design. The images often required careful selection and interpretation rather than direct application.
Another limitation was that AI occasionally focused on isolated aspects of the project instead of understanding the design as a complete architectural system. This meant that outputs often needed to be reviewed alongside drawings, models, and project requirements to ensure consistency.
The use of AI in design raises important ethical questions regarding originality, authorship, and academic integrity. While AI generated ideas, analyses, and visualizations, the final design remained the result of human decision-making and design development.
It would be unethical to present AI-generated outputs as entirely original work without acknowledging the role of the technology. Transparency is important when documenting the design process and explaining how AI contributed to project development.
There is also a risk that designers may become overly dependent on AI-generated solutions. Accepting outputs without critical evaluation could reduce creativity, independent thinking, and personal engagement with the design process. Therefore, AI should be used responsibly as a supporting tool rather than a replacement for design thinking.
As a future architectural designer, I have a responsibility to evaluate information critically and ensure that design decisions are appropriate, functional, and responsive to context. AI can provide recommendations, but it cannot assume responsibility for the quality or consequences of those decisions. Architects must verify information, assess feasibility, consider environmental impacts, and ensure that designs meet professional and ethical standards. Regardless of how advanced technology becomes, responsibility remains with the designer.
This project reinforced the importance of maintaining professional judgment when using digital tools. AI can assist the design process, but architects must remain accountable for every decision that affects users, communities, and the built environment.
Human judgement was the most important element throughout this project. Although AI generated valuable insights and alternative perspectives, it was necessary to determine which ideas were relevant, realistic, and aligned with the project objectives. Many AI recommendations were useful, but not all of them were suitable for the design. Decisions regarding concept development, architectural identity, spatial quality, user experience, and final presentation required personal evaluation and critical thinking. These decisions could not be automated.
The final outcome emerged through collaboration between AI capabilities and human creativity. AI expanded the range of possibilities, while human judgement provided direction, meaning, and control. This experience demonstrated that the strongest design outcomes are achieved when technology is used to support creativity rather than replace it.
Ultimately, the project showed that AI is most effective when viewed as a design assistant rather than a designer. While AI can contribute knowledge, analysis, and visualization, it is human judgement that transforms information into meaningful architectural decisions.
