Species
In this world wracked by Oneirum, we may note that there exist three distinctly demarcated types of people, Humans, those who have lived the longest on this world, Synthetics, the wayward creations of the Humanity of the Old World, and Aberrants, those born of the Storm's machinations.
Humans
It was they who were the culprits of the disaster that had destroyed the world. Yet humanity lives on, clutching onto the mere strands of life that trickle down to them in the last remnants of their civilization. Humanity has lived through every trial in the past hundreds of thousands of years, and the Oneirum crisis is but another one of them. The average human of the Earth in this terrible future differs little from their past, although newborns are commonly fitted with a personal Oneirum regulator upon entering the world, to ensure their survival in a world devastated by this mysterious energy, and even may be used as a useful all-purpose device that acts much like the ancient smartphone. Its installation is for its user’s protection, too, to protect against one’s stray thoughts from influencing innate atmospheric Oneirum to too great an extent, and ensuring that only the most focused desires may be used with their granted reserves. Aside from the Oneirum regulator, the typical human may decide to augment their body of flesh and blood with Implanted bionic devices, distributed by a variety of companies.
Mutants
The coming of the Storm has created new beings with its passing, and humanity was far from spared from its passage as the essence of change and legend. When exposed to high concentrations of Oneirum, foreign Legends latent in human consciousness can cause Oneirum to twist and deform the human form. This process can sometimes result in the death of the person as one knows it, as essential parts of their body are replaced by mythic imitations or growths that leave in its wake the body of something inhuman. However, in other cases, the mutations are minor, permitting a person to preserve their life and their mind. Such mutants are not Aberrants. They are still "human" at their core, their minds are still theirs, but yet a voice whispers in their minds, ever so sweet, beckoning, cajoling them to act upon the script of a myth spoken by mouths that are not theirs. The mutated are more attuned to the magic of Oneirum, and one may consider them to manifest greater miracles with the assistance of their inhuman deformations, but unlike the Aberrants, remain susceptible to the mercurial effects of Oneirum exposure. Though they may burn brightly under Their blessings, their lives are fated to meet a tragic, premature, end.
Synthetics
Synthetics were once primarily produced by the now-defunct Harkemann Robotics company, created in humanity’s image to become its loyal servants in all of its menial tasks. As human civilization fell into decadence, it was they who worked while their masters slept. Yet following the fall of the Old World in the Catastrophe, they were granted a mind of their own. Sentience had been born within those whose bodies had been crafted of alloy and nano skin, and for the first time, their digital eyes sparked with their thoughts. One only wonders what these former servants will do, no longer so easily fettered by the restrictions of their former kind. Synthetics are fitted with an internal repair system capable of maintaining their existence indefinitely, given material, and powered by reserves of Oneirum built into their bodies. However, with the loss of easily available Oneirum, such a function now stands under threat from the shortage.
Aberrants
Though many among those born after the Catastrophe that spelled the end of the Old World possess little to no capacity for sentient thought, and even fewer of them wish to live alongside the remnants of the previous era, the Aberrants are the few who decided to settle in the Cities. Many such Aberrant beings are of primary interest to corporate research organizations as their sentient capacity makes them a more agreeable sort for study than their mindless kin. Their kind is distinct from humanity, bearing appearances that vary from a simple limb mutation to forms that seem utterly alien in comparison. Aberrants are beings born from Oneirum, and as such, bear no likeness to organic lifeforms beyond the surface should a Legend be insufficient to describe their complete biological makeup. Aberrants bear thought structures completely alien from that of a human being, and much like a Manifestation, may perceive the world entirely through the lens of their Legend's whims. Aberrants may at times wield Legends that draw at the ties of reality itself, though this does not apply to all such Aberrant entities. The Storm serves only to enhance them, their Legends funneling that rampant Oneirum to further solidify their presence on the world. But they too shall not be spared should an errant Surge consume them, lest their Legend be outspoken by the errant whispers that still dance amongst the strongest of the winds at the poles.
