"Containment Observation Wing"
"Our personal purgatory."
“Dr. Pen and Miss Ma’am are considered vital to Back Wing operation and containment stability. Despite psychological concerns, both are to remain stationed in Laboratory 09-B indefinitely. Relocation or reassignment is strictly prohibited.”
Documented personnels:
Once the principal of a renowned academy in the modern world, Dr. Pen’s career collapsed after his wife became the subject of an experimental procedure—one that transformed her into a hostile Exper. Her attempted attack left him no choice but to end her life himself. Rather than turning away from science, Dr. Pen turned toward it, fixated on understanding how such transformations dismantle and reconstruct human identity.
His behavior since joining the E.I. has been described as erratic, yet highly productive. A constant smile masks his exhaustion and instability, while his sharp intellect and merciless curiosity earn him both fear and respect. Despite being completely human, his authority in the Back Wing mirrors that of an Exper—perhaps even higher. He’s often heard through the loudspeakers calling subjects to his lab, his voice described as “too cheerful for the setting.”
DR. PEN:
Age: 32
Height: 5'10"
Sexuality: Heterosexual
Species: Human
Position: Lead Researcher / Back Division Administrator
Former Occupation: Principal (Modern World Academic District)
Personality Traits: Erratic, sharp, obsessive. Smiles constantly, even in inappropriate situations. Mutters and talks to himself during experiments. Startles easily, yet recovers unnaturally fast. Displays curiosity stronger than empathy. Maintains control through unpredictability.
Hobbies: Late-night experimentation and research note dictation, Collecting broken pens and labeling each by the date of “failure,” Drinking coffee until his hands shake, Writing educational guides no one reads.
Dislikes: Unanswered questions, Sentimentality in others, Silence during experiments, “Ethical interference.”
Relationships: Ima: His assistant; often seen shadowing him. Treats her as both protégé and experiment in patience. Faculty: Respected but feared; his authority often goes unchallenged. Expers: Objects of fascination, not empathy.
Outfit: Typically wears a white button-up with patched shoulders, folded cuffs, a polka-dot tie, and a pen in his pocket. Alternates between this attire and a lab coat. Always wears slacks and loafers, and is rarely without a coffee cup. His glasses are perpetually smudged, though he never cleans them.
Full Name: Dr. Pennington Hale
IMA "Miss Ma'am":
Age: 26
Height: 4'12" (5’0”)
Sexuality: Biromantic Asexual
Species: Human
Position: Assistant Researcher / Pharmacological Developer
Former Occupation: Chemist at Wren Scientific Institute
Background: Daughter of a prestigious scientist, Ima was raised within laboratories rather than classrooms. Her brilliance was recognized early, but her emotional dependency on her father stunted her independence. When transferred to the Experimental Institution by her father’s recommendation, she discovered how deeply she feared separation—and sought attachment to the first stable figure she found: Dr. Pen.
Now she serves as his assistant and the Institution’s leading chemical formulator, responsible for creating serums that help Expers stabilize their altered physiology. Despite her timid nature, her work is critical to E.I.’s functioning—though her emotional instability has led to several disciplinary records, including a severe case where she euthanized an Exper she was ordered to sustain.
Personality Traits: Nervous, apologetic, and overly polite. Avoids eye contact; hugs herself when anxious. Trembles when spoken to suddenly. Overly attached to her superior. Kind and well-meaning, yet eerily calm during violence.
Hobbies: Creating chemical solutions and salves for Expers. Polishing lab glassware when anxious. Writing recipe notes in her father’s old notebooks. Sitting in silence beside Dr. Pen while he works.
Dislikes: Being alone. Raised voices or sudden noise. Seeing Expers restrained. Discussing her father.
Relationships: Dr. Pen: Deeply attached to him, bordering on dependency. Sees him as both mentor and emotional anchor. Faculty: Generally liked for her polite nature, but regarded as fragile. Expers: Treats them gently, though her unsettling calm under distress has made others wary.
Outfit: Prefers a short-sleeved button-up under a hoodie, paired with a mini skirt over leggings and strap shoes. Always wears glasses, and her braid reaches the floor. When working formally, she replaces the hoodie with a lab coat.

Location: Laboratory 09-B, “Containment Observation Wing”
Primary Personnel: Dr. Pen (ID: EIB-0912) & Assistant Ima (ID: EIA-4421)
Clearance Level: 05 — Internal Access Only
Date Range Covered: [REDACTED – Approx. 3.5 Years of Service]
Date: [REDACTED]
Location: Containment Chamber C-3
Involved Subjects:
Exper #A-192 “Lilt” — Humanoid; early-stage neural degradation; failed communication response.
Assistant Ima Wren.
Dr. Pen (indirect involvement).
Summary:
During a routine behavioral sedation test, Exper #A-192 entered a state of rapid psychological collapse, exhibiting violent convulsions and acute distress. Standard protocol required chemical stabilization via Ima’s formula [Compound I-7].
Instead, when the Exper began vocalizing distress and self-harm, Assistant Wren acted on her own authority, terminating the subject through manual asphyxiation—utilizing her own hair braid as a ligature. Witness accounts describe the act as “eerily calm.”
Following termination, Assistant Ima reported herself immediately, stating:
“It looked like it hurt too much. I didn’t want to let it keep hurting.”
Dr. Pen’s written response:
“Her decision was scientifically unsound, but emotionally sound. The body was clean. I admire efficiency, even when it defies orders.”
Administrative Outcome:
Assistant Ima: Penalized with 2-week isolation and psychiatric evaluation (no recorded emotional response).
Dr. Pen: Official reprimand for lack of supervision (no behavioral correction noted).
Containment Chamber C-3: Decommissioned pending sterilization; never reassigned.
Notes:
Subsequent to this event, Ima began wearing her hair tightly around herself, reportedly to “keep it from acting out again.”
Date: [REDACTED]
Location: Entire Back Division (triggered from Lab 09-B)
Involved Subjects:
Dr. Pen
T.S.C. President (“The Boss” – Nikki/Nik)
Multiple unidentified Expers
Summary:
Dr. Pen accessed the Back Wing PA system at approximately 2:43 AM, issuing a call for “The Boss of the Thanatology Club” to report to Laboratory 09-B. Audio logs indicate calm, almost cheerful tone:
“Nikki, dear, I’d like to talk to you about the definition of ‘death.’ Bring your best voice, won’t you?”
No official request had been filed for cross-wing summoning, and no faculty were on overnight shift at the time. By 3:08 AM, all surveillance feeds in the corridor leading to 09-B failed simultaneously.
System restored at 3:57 AM. Dr. Pen was later observed exiting his lab alone, his tie removed, glasses missing. When questioned, he stated:
“Everything was educational. They were delightful company.”
No trace of Nikki or any T.S.C. members was located within the laboratory, and no written report was filed by the subjects themselves. Blood traces found near Chamber D-4 were nonhuman.
Administrative Outcome:
Event logged but unverified.
No disciplinary action issued due to lack of concrete evidence.
Laboratory 09-B underwent superficial cleaning but was never sealed or investigated further.
Notes:
Subsequent to the incident, the PA system controls in 09-B were meant to be restricted. However, later maintenance reports confirm that Dr. Pen’s access remains active, with voice-recognition overrides enabled by his personal ID.
#0611 – Unauthorized Experimentation
Dr. Pen conducted “psychological endurance” testing on expired specimens, referring to them as “echoes worth interviewing.” No official experiment number filed.
#0630 – Self-Testing Incident
Ima was found collapsed at her desk with chemical burns on her arms. Claimed she was “testing tolerance ratios.” Denied further medical assistance.
#0659 – Nighttime Visitation
Security footage shows Dr. Pen conversing alone in Chamber E-2 for 48 minutes. Audio revealed a second, unidentified voice responding. Chamber confirmed empty at inspection.
Dr. Pen: Shows stable intelligence metrics but declining emotional calibration. Displays humor during ethical reviews. Frequently references “my wife’s eyes” when describing specimen behavior.
Assistant Ima: Displays codependency on Dr. Pen. Inconsistent affect—alternates between visible anxiety and total calm in high-stress scenarios. Has not been permitted direct euthanasia authorization since Incident #0472.
Final Remarks:
“The laboratory functions smoothly under their care. Their methods are unorthodox but yield consistent results. What the Back Wing calls madness, we call progress.”
