FILE: DEPARTMENTAL DESIGNATION — THANATOLOGY STUDIES
Access Tier: Level 4 (Authorized Instructional & Observational Personnel)
Division Head: Professor Morwen Bloodwing
Associated Group: Thanatology Study Club (T.S.C.)
Classification: High-Ranking Academic Entity – Back Wing
Overview:
Thanatology refers to the structured study of death, dying, and the continuity of identity beyond biological cessation. Within the confines of the Experimental Institution, the field has evolved beyond theoretical science into an applied discipline of both mortuary practice and existential philosophy.
Introduced and maintained by Professor Morwen Bloodwing, Thanatology remains the most stable and long-standing academic program in the Back Wing. Due to its record of consistent discipline, cooperation, and valuable research output, it has been designated as a High-Privilege Division, granting its participants access to restricted materials, unmonitored research sessions, and authorized use of the adjoining Graveyard Sector for practical coursework.
Institutional Function:
Thanatology serves three primary institutional purposes:
Behavioral Regulation: Students who engage in mortuary studies demonstrate lower aggression and higher social cohesion.
Biological Observation: Controlled exposure to death stimuli provides measurable insight into Exper regeneration and emotional response patterns.
Containment Integration: The division assists in processing deceased Expers and maintaining the physical and psychological balance of the Back Wing.
Sociocultural Standing:
Within the Exper hierarchy, Thanatology is seen as a mark of prestige and intellect. Members of the Thanatology Study Club (T.S.C.) occupy the highest rung of the Back Wing’s social order—viewed with a mix of reverence, fear, and suspicion by lesser groups. Their access to the graveyard, academic privileges, and relative protection under Professor Bloodwing’s supervision render them untouchable by most internal disputes.
Rumors persist that graduates of the Thanatology program are occasionally transferred to Front Wing research divisions, though no verified documentation confirms this.
Instructor Notes:
“Thanatology isn’t morbid or gloomy. It’s human. We study what others fear so they don’t have to.”
— Prof. Morwen Bloodwing, Lecture 1: On the Mercy of Understanding
"Thanatology — the study of life’s quiet conclusion. Enrollment by invitation only."
