In 2007, Professor Lawrence Lessig's gave a classic TED talk about how copyright laws strangle creativity. Despite the almost pre-historic nature (in digital terms) of the presentation, it offers a superb view of the problems of copyright. (For those of you who do not go to mixed beaches, you might want to skip from minute 9:35 to minute 10:22.) Watching this video is optional, but highly recommended.
