Module 7 - Observation and Post-Conference

Objectives:

• Evaluate a lesson using the NIET rubric

• Evaluate and reflect on evidence collected from observed lesson

• Identify the purpose of the post conference

• Identify the roles of the teacher and evaluator in the post-conference

• Observe and analyze a post-conference

Overview:

In this module, you will be observing a 3rd grade mathematics lesson (approximately 30 minutes). Use your knowledge and understanding of the instruction domain of the NIET rubric to evaluate the lesson. It is important that you can support your ratings with evidence collected from the observation.

The post-conference is intended to help both the teacher and evaluator as the observation process ends. The post-conference provides an opportunity for both the teacher and evaluator to reflect on the observed lesson. It is expected that the evaluator come to the post-conference with both broad and specific questions. The broad questions are intended to help the teacher reflect on why they did specific things and also how they could make changes for the future. The specific questions and feedback will be provided in the form of reinforcements and refinements. The evaluator will provide the teacher with 1-2 areas of reinforcement and refinement during the post-conference. It is preferable that the post-conference take place one or two days after the lesson. Due to the nature of clinical and student teaching experiences in teacher preparation programs, USC Upstate supervisors will most likely meet with pre-service teachers directly after the observed lesson.
