Objectives:
• Develop a procedural knowledge and understanding of the South Carolina Teaching Standards and begin to move to a conceptual understanding.
• Gain an understanding of the evaluation process, expectations and protocols that will be used by evaluators.
• Develop procedural knowledge of the 11 Instruction indicators found on the NIET rubric.
• Identify characteristics found in the descriptors for each performance level
Overview:
Now that you know about the evaluation cycle (Pre-conference, Observation, Post-Conference), we will focus on how the observation will be evaluated. The instrument that is used to evaluate the observation is called the NIET rubric. This rubric is broken down into 4 domains, with each domain defined by multiple indicators. The instruction domain is made up of 11 indicators (the most out of any domain). During this module, you will examine each of the indicators and how their ratings are distinguished through each of the descriptors. Analyzing each of the descriptors will help you develop an understanding of how teaching is evaluated with this rubric. It is important to note, that ratings are determined through the collection of student and teacher evidence. All ratings must be supported by evidence. It is no longer acceptable to make inferences about what is going on in the classroom. Both teachers and evaluators must also realize that the rating of proficient reflects evidence of good teaching. A rating of exemplary should only be awarded when there is evidence of outstanding teaching for that given indicator.
