Overview:
Not all classroom observations will involve the full NIET rubric. A formative assessment form has been developed to provide teachers with feedback about their teaching without having to use the entire NIET rubric. The formative assessment form focuses on the Instruction and Planning domains of the NIET rubric. At USC Upstate, all of the clinical observations will use the formative assessment form since the foundational components of classroom environment are many times out of a teacher candidate’s control. University supervisors for student teachers will have a total of 4 classroom observations. Two of those observations will be conducted using the formative assessment form (the 1st and 3rd observations) and two observations will be conducted using the full Expanded ADEPT 4.0 Cycle and NIET rubric (2nd and 4th observations). The summative assessment form was created to summarize a teacher’s performance in each of the four domains. The summative assessment form should highlight the strengths (areas of reinforcement) and weaknesses (areas of refinement) for each domain while also providing evidence to support an overall rating. The university supervisor and cooperating teacher will work together and discuss the teacher candidate’s teaching while filling out the summative assessment form. The summative assessment form should be shared with the teacher candidate during their last field experience meeting. In this module, you will examine the formative and summative assessment forms used at USC Upstate and make connections to the NIET rubric’s descriptors.
