Objectives:
• Develop a procedural knowledge and understanding of the South Carolina Teaching Standards and begin to move to a conceptual understanding.
• Gain an understanding of the evaluation process, expectations and protocols that will be used by evaluators.
• Develop procedural knowledge of the 3 Planning indicators found on the NIET rubric.
• Identify characteristics found in the descriptors for each performance level
• Make connections between the Instruction Indicators and Planning indicators
Overview
Now that you have gained a better understanding of the instruction domain, its indicators, and the performance level descriptors for each indicator, we will examine the planning domain. The planning domain is made up of 3 indicators. Even though there are not as many indicators in the planning domain as the instruction domain, they are still important and connected. During this module, you will examine each of the indicators and how their ratings are distinguished through each of the descriptors. Analyzing each of the descriptors will help you develop an understanding of how the planning for teaching is evaluated with this rubric. It is important to note, that ratings are determined through the collection of student and teacher evidence. All ratings must be supported by evidence. It is no longer acceptable to make inferences about what is going on in the classroom. Both teachers and evaluators must also realize that the rating of proficient reflects evidence of good teaching. A rating of exemplary should only be awarded when there is evidence of outstanding teaching for that given indicator.
