Introduction
The redesign of the Interpretive Visitor Centre provided an opportunity to explore how Artificial Intelligence (AI) can support architectural design thinking. Throughout this project, AI tools including ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini were used to assist with climate analysis, design evaluation, idea generation, and sustainability strategies. While AI contributed valuable insights and accelerated the design process, it became clear that professional judgment remained essential in evaluating and implementing design decisions.
What AI Contributed
AI significantly improved the design process by providing rapid access to information and generating multiple design possibilities. ChatGPT assisted in analyzing the climate conditions of Putrajaya and identifying suitable passive design strategies. Claude helped evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the original proposal, highlighting issues related to shading, ventilation, and environmental performance. Gemini generated alternative facade and sustainability concepts that expanded the range of design options considered.
These tools enabled a more comprehensive exploration of design solutions than would have been possible through traditional methods alone. AI also improved efficiency by reducing the time required for research and preliminary design investigations.
What AI Could Not Contribute
Despite its advantages, AI was unable to replace architectural reasoning and professional decision-making. AI-generated outputs often lacked an understanding of the project's specific context, budget constraints, construction requirements, and cultural considerations. Some design suggestions appeared visually appealing but were technically unrealistic or difficult to construct.
For example, one AI-generated facade concept proposed a double-skin envelope but failed to provide the necessary ventilation cavity required for effective performance in a tropical climate. This demonstrated that AI-generated solutions must always be verified and critically assessed before implementation.
Limitations Encountered
Several limitations were observed during the AI-assisted design process. Different AI tools occasionally produced conflicting recommendations, requiring additional analysis to determine the most appropriate solution. Some generated visualizations prioritized aesthetics over functionality and environmental performance. In addition, AI tools sometimes provided generic design responses that required further refinement to suit the specific needs of the Interpretive Visitor Centre.
These limitations highlighted the importance of treating AI as a support tool rather than an authoritative design source.
Ethical Considerations
The use of AI in architectural design raises important ethical concerns regarding authorship, originality, and accountability. Although AI assisted in generating ideas and visualizations, all final decisions remained the responsibility of the designer. Architectural professionals must ensure that AI-generated information is verified, accurately referenced when necessary, and used responsibly.
There is also a risk that excessive dependence on AI may reduce critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills. Therefore, AI should be viewed as a collaborative tool that enhances human creativity rather than replacing it.
Professional Responsibility and Human Judgment
This project was a reminder of the need for professional judgment in architectural practice. AI gave some suggestions, but did not fully grasp the project's aims, user requirements, cultural context or broader effects. The final design was accomplished by analyzing, selecting, editing and improving AI-generated ideas with architectural knowledge and critical thinking.
Finally, AI assisted the design process through its research, analysis and exploration capabilities. But that did not mean that the architect was not responsible for the quality of the designs, safety, sustainability and user experience. The project clearly shows that the best way forward is a combination of the power of AI and human skills.
Conclusion
The redesign of the Interpretive Visitor Centre demonstrated that AI can be a valuable tool for architectural design development. It improved efficiency, expanded design exploration, and supported environmental analysis. However, the project also highlighted the limitations of AI and the continuing importance of professional judgment.
