This session explores practical applications of AI in English Language Teaching. We'll examine AI-powered tools for lesson planning, personalized learning, and assessment. Participants will learn to integrate AI effectively, enhance student engagement and learning, and implement AI-based strategies in ELT contexts, balancing innovation with pedagogical best practices.
EFL/ESL Adult education teachers
University professors,
Teacher trainers
To equip English language teachers with knowledge and skills to effectively integrate AI-powered tools in their teaching practice, enhancing student engagement and learning outcomes.
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
Identify at least three AI-powered tools specifically designed for English language teaching.
Demonstrate the use of an AI tool for creating personalized lesson plans tailored to diverse student needs.
Analyze the potential benefits and limitations of using AI in assessment and feedback processes for language learners.
Design a sample activity that incorporates an AI-powered tool to enhance student engagement in a specific language skill (e.g., speaking, writing, listening, or reading).
Evaluate the effectiveness of AI-driven personalized learning paths for English language students.
Compare traditional teaching methods with AI-enhanced approaches in at least two areas of language instruction.
Formulate strategies to balance the use of AI tools with established pedagogical best practices in ELT.
Outline an implementation plan for introducing an AI tool in their own teaching context, considering potential challenges and solutions.
Critically assess the ethical considerations of using AI in language teaching, including data privacy and algorithmic bias.
Develop a set of criteria for selecting appropriate AI tools that align with specific learning objectives and student needs in ELT contexts.
Explore the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in English Language Teaching (ELT).
Gain a fundamental understanding of AI,
Compare traditional and 21st-century teaching methods,
Explore AI tools for language skills development, and
Learn about AI-based alternative assessment strategies.
Participants who complete the weekly tasks will be awarded a digital badge for each week and will qualify for the official EVO 2025 Certificate of Participation at the end of the 5-week session.
Focus: Introduction to AI and its relevance to ELT
By the end of Week 1, participants will be able to:
Define AI and its core principles (e.g., machine learning, natural language processing) within the context of ELT.
Apply basic prompt engineering techniques to effectively interact with and elicit desired outputs from at least one AI tool (e.g., ChatGPT, Google Bard).
Analyze and evaluate three current applications of AI in ELT (e.g., automated feedback, personalized learning, content creation).
Discuss the potential benefits and challenges of AI integration in ELT classrooms.
Activities:
Attend the live synchronous session: “Introduction to AI in ELT”
Read provided articles on AI basics and its applications in education
Participate in a discussion forum: “AI in my classroom: Opportunities and Challenges”

Create a mind map illustrating AI applications in education
Focus: Comparing teaching approaches and managing virtual learning environments
By the end of Week 2, participants will be able to:
Compare and contrast traditional and 21st-century teaching methods across three key dimensions (e.g., teacher roles, learner roles, assessment approaches).
Analyze the challenges and opportunities presented by virtual learning environments (VLEs) in ELT.
Design and evaluate a motivational strategy specifically tailored for a VLE, incorporating key principles of learner engagement and online pedagogy.
Reflect on their current teaching practices and identify areas for integrating 21st-century skills and AI-powered tools.
Activities:
