This week, we are featuring Lorna Simpson and her concepts. Please think about how she explores identity, race, gender, and beauty standards throughout our lesson this week.
We will briefly go over this handout in class. Feel free to look over this handout on your own time.
You are also provided with a physical copy of this handout!
In this video, we will learn more about Lorna Simpson's purpose in her work. Please view the images after the video and answer some questions.
What do you see? What do you know about Lorna Simpson that you can apply to her artwork?
What issues is she trying to express?
Photo-Text: Combining photographs with words to challenge how an image is read
Communication: Visual message, idea, or feeling
Ambiguity: Unclear/uncertain. Open to more than one interpretation.
Identity Politics: Focusing on lives and experiences of people that are often excluded and mistreated
Symbolism: Objects that represent ideas and meanings
We will be using Flipgrid, a platform that allows us to video record us, for our video journaling prompt. Follow this link to do your personal recordings <https://flipgrid.com/408318d8>. NOTE: Other students cannot see your video, but you are able to see the two teachers' examples.

We will be starting our identity digital photo-text! This video will guide you through the process, explore Google Drawings, and give suggestions/ideas for your own photo-text project. This project is a way to bring awareness to an experience you have as a way to control your own representation.
Keep these ideas in mind as you create your own photo-text!
Share your experience with a stereotype.
