What is community? they ask me. They tell me stories of boys fighting together, last
breath on the battlefield. Is that community, they ask?
They tell me stories of women’s faces forbidden, black cloth hiding their eyes, praying to
survive tomorrow. Is that community, they ask?
They tell me stories of children protesters shot down on the street, their blood mixing
with fire hoses and sewer water. Is that community, they ask?
No, I tell them.
Community is when men return home, forming peace organizations. Girls see the first
ray of sunshine in the morning. Children stand up for what they believe in, hand in hand.
That is community.

Authors Notes: My poem, Community, depicts true community, which is found in people who come together to create change, whether it’s men seeking peace after war, girls experiencing newfound freedom, or children standing hand in hand for their beliefs. It suggests that community is not just about being in the same place or experiencing the same struggles but about supporting, uplifting, and working toward a better future together.
