The study of Philosophy, Critical Thinking and Ethics are not just academic endeavors. It is the development of skills meant to be used in the real world to improve ourselves and society. As such, you will be asked to complete a practical project in which you apply the skills you are learning to make a real difference!
There are two options for this project: Service and Advocacy.
If you choose Service, you will have to perform at least 20 hours of service and complete a reflection assignment. Completing a Service Project will also earn you an extra credit in the class.
If you choose Advocacy, you will have to pick an ethical/social issue that you feel passionate about, propose a solution for the issue, and write to a newspaper and an elected official to advocate for your proposal. This is a good way for something to be addressed using policies and laws.
I work with EVC's Honors Institute to offer Honors Credit for this course. The Honors Institute offers motivated and hard-working students an opportunity to experience an intellectually stimulating environment through honors contracts, seminars, community service, field trips, or cultural events, and collaboration with faculty and fellow Honors students. Students who successfully complete an Honors contract will receive Honors recognition (H) on their official transcripts.
There is more information about the Honors Program on the "Honors Credit" page on Canvas and the Honors Program website.
