Augmented Reality in the real word

What to Expect

Augmented Reality is a MASSIVE topic with many specific use-cases. Our Team hails from a variety of educational contexts and after preliminary research and discussion we found ourselves most interested in HOW we might use currently available AR technologies in our teaching, designing or training.

Therefore, our approach to this topic was experimentation and exploration focusing on each of our individual, professional contexts. We agreed upon basic topics and format, then supported each other's research and exploration. The following are questions that guided our exploration:

  1. Specifically, what are pragmatic, simple and low-cost ways I can implement AR in my work today? OR - if that pathway is not available, what is an ideal hypothetical use?

  2. Where do I start? What's a good approach for figuring this out?

  3. What are the risks and what are the advantages?

Choose the Order to Explore:

After the introductory pages, you will find 5 projects to explore and may review them in whatever order you prefer. There are questions and/or small activities accompanying each, culminating in our Final Thoughts page.

Throughout our research we've downloaded and experimented with several AR apps and curated those we found most user-friendly, free (or partially free) and with applicability to our various education contexts. If you don't mind downloading and installing to your mobile device, we ask that you choose one to try this week and explore the optional activities at the bottom of the project page.

Curated AR apps we recommend:

  1. MakrAR - Learn more in the Elementary Project

  2. Shapes3D - Learn more in the Elementary Project

  3. Google Arts and Culture - Learn more in Secondary School Project

  4. Grib3D - Learn more in Secondary School Project

  5. MindMapAR - Learn more in Online Post Secondary Project

  6. ARLoopa - Learn more in 'Students as Designers' and the 'Post Secondary' Projects

  7. Menu.AR - Learn more in the Hospitality and Food Industry Project

WARNING:

When using Augmented Reality on your mobile device ALWAYS be aware and careful of what's happening around you. Make sure you are somewhere safe, particularly if you venture outside. You may want to bring a buddy to help you stay aware of your surroundings. Look UP from your device FREQUENTLY and do not try to use AR in a busy, high traffic, or distracting location.
