STEM専門教員にアンケート調査
2021年にSTEM分野大学教員15名に以下の項目についてアンケートを行った。
学生に必要な英語力や身に着けてほしい英語力について、以下のスキルが挙げられた。
Reading, presenting, and vocabulary are areas to be focused on from the perspectives of STEM professors.
Presenting in poster sessions seems to be a common practice.
Discussions and Q and A sessions are also considered important.
STEM professors recommend a wide variety of reading materials.
また、STEM学生が英語で参加することのある活動について以下の例が挙げられて、これらの場面でのサポートをする必要が明らかになった。

インタビューデータ分析
同15名のインタビューはZoomで録画したものを書き起こした。得られたデータをNVivo を用いて分析した。オープンコーディングで得られた主要コードは以下の通りである。
Preparation for/attending international conferences
Experiences in international conferences are helpful.
Reading ability
With a dictionary, students are able to read academic papers.
Reading accurately is important, though some students cannot do so.
A presentation course
Especially the poster session course seems to be effective.
Reluctance to use/read English
Ss do not read programming error messages.
Japanese are quiet in int’l conferences (according to professor’ experiences in business.)
Lack of schema in Japanese (L1)
Students have not learned academic communications in Japanese.
The use of machine translation
How to use the machine translation should be taught. Some students do not check the produced output.
