数理科学、即ちコンピュータサイエンス、ヒューマンインタラクション、

統計等を専攻する大学生を対象とした、アカデミックコミュニティでの

国際的発信力を養成する英語教育プログラムの開発を目指す。

本研究は、大学２、３年次以降のSTEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics)を専攻する大学生を対象とし、国際的発信力を養成するESP (English for Specific Purposes)プログラムを英語教員と専門科目教員との協働により開発し実施、検証することを目的とした。

This study aims to develop, implement, and evaluate an ESP (English for Specific Purposes) program for university students majoring in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) in their second or third year or later, in collaboration with English faculty and decipline faculty in order to cultivate international communication skills. 

ESPにおいてニーズ調査は重要な要素である。当事者である学生、本研究では、学生および専門科目教員を対象に、英語使用ニーズについてアンケートとインタビュー調査を行った。

Needs assessment is an important component of ESP. We conducted surveys and interviews with the stakeholders of the program, namely STEM students and professors in their seminars and laboratories.

2021年度までのニーズ調査で、STEM分野の学生は国際学会で英語で発表を行う機会があることがわかった。このニーズを受けて、発表直前の準備ワークショップを開発した。ワークショップはPPTスライドの作り方や発表の方法、ポスターセッションでのやりとりに及んだ。

Needs assessments revealed that students in STEM fields have opportunities to present in English at conferences. In response to such need, a preparation workshop was developed.  It included how to make PPT slides, how to present effectively, and how to communicate with the audience at a presentation/poster session. 

Presentation Skllls: 反復練習によりプレゼンスキルが上達するか、アクションリサーチを行った。ビデオ録画を用いて練習した結果、ラッシュ分析によると一定の効果が認められた。

A study was conducted to investigate whether presentation skills improve through repeated practices. Rasch analyses revealed that practices with video-recording improved some aspects of performances.

Reading Skills: 専門科目の内容を英語で読むことの効果をモチベーションと自己効力感の観点から分析中。

The effects of reading the content of specialized areas in English are being analyzed in terms of motivation and self-efficacy.
