Are they any good?

Depends on the course, but many online TEFL courses are not any good because:

1. There are no visuals

2. There's too much theory

3. There's no feedback

The cheapo course I took had no video and photos except for a few generic stock photos. People don't read online they skim and scan and they don't remember words.

Monkey see monkey do. You need visuals to learn.

Theory is a problem with "education". How many useless classes have you taken that you totally forgot? For me it was history, geometry, biology, chemistry, and many others.

In one ear and out the other.

Feedback with a human can make a difference.
