For this project, I’m looking at how social media affects both society as a whole and me personally. I reviewed current stats, read through research on its impact, and even took a social media addiction quiz to get a better sense of my own habits. The goal is really to step back and think about how these platforms shape the way we communicate, think, and interact — and to be honest with myself about the role they play in my everyday life.
After seeing my results from the "Am I Addicted to Social Media?" quiz. I’m honestly proud of how I’ve learned to keep social media in its place. With a world that has grown to be very social media driven, It’s nice to see that I can enjoy it without feeling tied to it or anxious when I’m offline. I like being present in my own life, and these results remind me that I’ve built a healthy balance. I use social media to stay connected and informed, but I do not let it take over. It feels good to know I’m in control of my habits, not the other way around.
One statistic from the Pew Research materials that really stood out to me is that 92% of adults ages 30–49 use YouTube, making it the most popular social media platform in the country. I focused on this age group because it’s the one I’m part of, so the data feels especially relevant to my own experience. Seeing how widespread YouTube use is among people my age made me think about how much we rely on it — whether it’s for entertainment, learning new skills, or finding quick answers to everyday questions. Choosing this statistic helped me understand not only broader social media trends, but also the habits and preferences of people in my own demographic.
Honestly, I think social media has a huge impact on society because it’s basically part of everything we do now. It keeps people connected and makes it easy to share ideas, but it also creates a lot of pressure to look a certain way or keep up with everyone else’s lives. I’ve noticed that it can bring out both the best and worst in people, depending on how they use it. It spreads information fast, which can be helpful, but it also spreads drama and misinformation just as quickly. Overall, I think social media is powerful, and we’re all still figuring out how to use it in a way that actually helps us instead of stressing us out.
This project helped me understand how strongly social media influences both society and my own daily routines. By reviewing research, analyzing statistics, and taking a social media addiction quiz, I became more aware of my habits and was reassured to see that I’ve created a healthy balance with social media usage in my daily life. I can enjoy social media without relying on it. I also realized how powerful these platforms are—able to connect people and spread information quickly, but also capable of creating pressure and fueling misinformation. The main lesson I’m taking away is that intentional use matters. When I stay mindful of how I engage online, social media remains a useful tool rather than something that adds stress.
