Gradient of the Phoenix's colors, a scale of cool colors that change from the center to further at the ends of the bird.
Experimentation of text regarding size and formation.
With the collaboration with Claire, we selected an idea and formulated various sketches that we find most suitable to visually represent our idea. These ideas varied often based on the different mix of colors, setting the focal point of the pheonix, along with the addition and removal of certain aspects. We eventually selected a combination of the last three images with the use of the navy blue background, mugunghwa branches and flowers, the grandient colors of the pheonix, and text.
Section 4: Process
This piece was created on an old piece of mine back in elementary school, so I like to think this gives this piece a bit of a symbolic aspect. We began by coating the old piece with gesso to avoid the old painting from showing into our new piece. Then we painted a deep navy color as the background. Afterwards, we used a projector to project our digitally drawn idea onto the canvas in order for us to outline it. We used acrilic paint afterwards to color and paint our idea.
Digital timelapse of our final rendition.
Section 5: Artist Statement
In the piece "Eternal Resilience," a collaborative piece between Claire and I, we created a portrait of a blue phoenic, representing our school mascot and spirit, with the delicate beauty of Mugunghwa flowers, the national flower of Korea. This artwork serves as a visual ode to the vibrant cultural tapestry of our school community and its surroundings. Set against a backdrop of deep blue, symbolizing the boundless depths of knowledge and experience within our institution, the phoenix emerges as a focal point, radiating resilience and vitality.
Through strategic shading and brighter tones at its core, we emphasize the phoenix's symbolic importance as a beacon of strength and renewal. The Mugunghwa flowers, gracefully on the sides and branching outwards to the phoenix, pay homage to the rich heritage of Korea (because they're the national flower), intertwining slightly with the phoenix to represent the coexistence of diverse cultural influences in our school environment.
Experimentation with acrylic paint, incorporating water to blend and smooth the hues, lead us to get a play of light and shadow, enhancing the overall depth and contrast of the piece overall + the phoenix. As students of an international school community deeply rooted in Korean culture, "Eternal Resilience" stands as a almost testament to the spirit of unity, resilience, and cultural exchange that defines our identity as a school and students at KIS.
