Section 1: Finished Artwork
Complication in Judgement
Dimensions: 25.4cm x 25.4cm
Date: November 24, 2022
Idea: Inspired by the quote, "Follow your heart but take your brain with you", both the heart and brain is shown in the print. Following one's heart can set a path to one's dreams and passion, but decisions should be made wisely and carefully to avoid irrational, regretful choices in life.
Materials: Lino print, ink, pencil, pen, carving tool, Ipad
Process: After sketching my final idea on the lino block, it was carved, transferred to the other side, then the other side was carved. This would allow two colors to be on the same print
Section 2: Planning & Practice
Stamp Practice: Benjamin
This was my first stamp to practice using the carving tool. I wanted to make a worm. I also tried to use thin lines as details on the worm.

Inspiration/Reference for the heart
Inspiration for having the lines inside the brain to shape a heart
Sketches I have done to plan out my ideas
Using the inspiration of making a shape inside the brain, I wanted to form the shape of an anatomical heart in the brain to show both the brain (logic and reason) and heart (emotion and passion) is used to make important decisions in life.
My final drawing for my print
I inverted the lines between the brain and heart, carving everything but the lines for the brain and carving only the lines for the heart.
Section 3: Experimentation
I mixed different colors of ink to get the blue and red shade I wanted. This was my first attempt and I liked how the blue turned out, but the red was too dark. During the printing process, I either put too much ink or pressed unnecessarily hard on the paper.
These are different tests I have done to see what amount of pressure or applies ink would have the most preferred outcome.Â
This is another print I tested different colors. I mixed in green for the brain and pink for the heart. I liked the original blue and red better. The print aslo came out slightly smudged.
Section 4: Process
This piece was the most confusing so far, especially when I inverted carved and un-carved lines between the two sides. I started with the simple outlines first. On the brain side of the print, I carved out all areas that were not lined, beginning wit the background and center, where the colored heart would go. Then I drew on small details and carved around them. Then I went through a similar process for the other side, but instead carved the lines and details so the uncarved area would show in color.
This is my digital process of making my idea for the print, which I then transfered to the lino block.
Making notes on the paper print of my drawing
Section 5: Artist Statement
This project was new to me and I found some areas difficult. It was often confusing separating the two sides when I was drawing my idea, but it felt easier afterwards. It was a project that I needed to be patient with and be very careful, as if i carved an area incorrectly, it would show in my prints. Both sides had its easier aspects and hard ones. The brain side was difficult because I was carving around a line, trying the keep the lines' consistant, as well as the small detail line inside. The heart side was easier for carving because I just had to carve the drawn lines on the lino block. However, I can not undo what I carved, so if the carving was skewed or to thick, there wasn't anything I could do about it. The printing process afterwards had it's difficulties as well, keeping the amount of ink in mind, lining up both sides, and the pressure on the print. However, it felt very rewarding to get a nice, clean print afterwards.
Using the quote, "Follow your heart but take your brain with you", I interpreted it that good decisions are made using both your head and heart. Following your passion will lead to a desired life, but you should still be careful and make rational choices. Adding both organs in the print would relate and help convey the quote.
