Idea: By learning the artistic style of 'Fauvism", I utilized it in my piece to create a surreal and vibrant image with a vast usage of dream-like colors.
Materials: Oil Pastels, Blending Stump
Process: After selecting a photo with various light and shadowed surfaces, I drew the piece as I replaced those. colors with non-realistic, vibrant colors that alternated with each surface. These colors, drawn with oil pastel, are then smoothed and blended out with a blending stump.
Section 2: Planning & Practice
Oil Pastel Techniques
I remember I've had a lot of difficulty working with oil pastels, mainly for the reason that it was difficult to layer over and I would often have difficulty with the colors muddling together unintentionally. But through various tests, I was able to find this material more comfortable, as well as finding various techniques that I used throughout the piece. For example, I mainly used a blending stump to blend and smooth out the edges of the pastels and scrapped any unwanted parts with a box color so it was easier to layer over. The third image is a process of my early planning, trying to piece an image that had enough light and shadows as well as asymetrical balance.
Selected Landscape photos
My personal criteria for the selected landscape image was for the image to contain several light an dark surfaces so I can easily play around with various shades to imitate the brightness of shadows of these surfaces. After selecting the image, I changed and edited the overall hue of the photo to more closely resemble the colors I would use in my piece. This was done for base colors, but I ended up changing a lot with various colors and tones.
Section 3: Experimentation
I looked over several images and pieces using fauvism, referencing different methods artists used colors and blends. I also practiced with the material myself, trying to test the pastels in shapes and objects, as I've tested with an eye. I've found that it's very important to figure out the color to use before applying it on paper as it is not easy to layer over or remove.
Section 4: Process
The process of oil pastel with the repeated blending and usage of several colors was very time consuming and an intricate process. I used new techniques that I've learned in the process as well as in class. Once method I used several times was the usage of blending stumps to smooth and blend the edges of the oil pastel. It felt much more effective than using my hand or tissues, ending up with a smoothly transitioning color blend. Another was the usage of a box cutter to scrape the oil pastel for areas I wanted to cover. I used light tones, often yellow, in bright areas and dark purples and blues for heavily shadowed areas.
Section 5: Artist Statement
I started out this project afraid of using this material as it was very difficult to use before as the colors often mixed and muddled and it was difficult to layer. However, it was a much more eenjoyable and visually apealing process, utilizing newfound techniques like using blending stumps for smoother blends. Experimenting with unconventional tools such as a box cutter allowed me to scrape and reveal textures, adding intricate details in select areas. Purposeful use of bright yellows for well-lit spaces and deep purples and blues for shadows conveyed specific emotions and moods. Overall, my piece had the mixture and balanced usage of vibrant hues along with the shades associated with bright areas and shadows.
