Section 1: Finished Artwork
"Follow your heart but take your brain with you"
Dimensions: 25.4cm x 25.4cm
Date: December 13, 2022
Idea: Inspired by the quote, "Follow your heart but take your brain with you", both the heart and brain is shown in the print. Following one's heart can set a path to one's dreams and passion, but decisions should be made wisely and carefully to avoid irrational, regretful choices in life.
Materials: Lino print, pen, colored paper
Process: After completing the print, I cut out paper with the text that fits the quote. "HEART" and "BRAIN" is cut out to shape a heart and a lightbulb.
"Time in Precious"
Dimensions: 25.4cm x 25.4cm
Date: December 12, 2022
Idea: Inspired by the quote, "Time is precious", I drew the text in a "sandy color" inside of an hourglass. The word "precious" feels very vibrant to me, so I used multiple colors blended in the hourglass.
Materials: Pencil, acrylic paint, colored pencils
Process: After sketching my idea with pencil, I used acrylic paint to finish this piece. Acrylic dries quickly, so it was hard to blend. So I mixed various colors to give it a blending effect. For smaller details, I used colored pencils.
Section 2: Planning & Practice
I practiced writing in a style I was not used to writing in, and practiced with markers. I wrote letters and multiple strokes. This seemed simple at first but was actually pretty challenging. I normally have messy handwriting when I write casually, and during these exercises, I used a brush marker and cursive font/lettering. There were many strokes and patterns I was unfamiliar with, but it was still nice to experiment.
I had a dramatic flashback back to a DVD I had years ago. It was about creating something with the word, so I took inspiration from that.
This was the inspiration for the heart
This was my inspiration/reference for the hourglass in the "Time is Precious" piece.
Section 3: Experimentation
These are the sketches I've done for planning out the lettering of the quote "Follow your heart but take your brain with you". I experimented between fonts, but also tried the idea of shaping the word.
These are the sketches of how I wanted the drawing to look like as a whole and the lettering for the quote, "Time is Precious".
Section 4: Process
Both pieces were fun and simple to work on. I experimented with different ways I wanted to style the text, then used different techniques for each piece. One I cut out paper then attached it to my print paper. The heart cut-out was a simple idea that worked out, but the brain was more challenging because putting the word in the "shape of a brain" didn't really look like a brain. Eventually, I settled with a lightbulb to connect with "idea" or "logic". The other was painted using acrylic. It was hard to blend with acrylic, so I had to make various shades of color to give the blended effect. To finish the piece, I used colored pencil to lightly make an outline around the words to seperate it from the background.
"Follow your heart but take your brain with you"
On my print, there were lines that printed onto the paper that I did not want. I tested to see if white paint would be good for covering up the ink and they painted the stray lines over with white. I then cutout paper in letter shapes or with writing on it.
"Time is Precious"
I had scrap paper with me while I was painting this piece to check if the shade of the paint was what I wanted. Sometimes the paint might be a shade or color that I did not want, so I thought it would be better to test on a different paper beforehand.
Section 5: Artist Statement
This project was more simple and short compared to the last few projects. We did learn how to emphasize certain words that are important to the quote, whether it is done through a different size, color, font, etc. I emphasized the words "Follow your heart but take your brain with you", as they were the two important subjects of the quote, and they were connected to my print as well. Using two colors that matched the print, I cut out the letters of both words so they would resemble a heart and lightbulb. In my second piece, I emphasized "Time is Precious", placing them in the two parts of the hourglass and "is" being drawing similarly to falling sand in the hourglass. The colors of the hourglass was inspired by how light refracts in glass, sometimes showing different colors, but also the word "precious" seems like it should be more vibrant than dull, which is why I avoided from painting the glass in shades of grey.
Unfortunately, I was not very comfortable writing in the style of the exercises early in the project (writing cursive with a brush marker). I instead wanted the words to connect or react to the drawing in the piece, both resembling the print and resembling sand in an hourglass. However, I am proud with the outcome, especially the "Time is Precious" piece because of the mix of multiple colors in the hourglass, as well as the shading on top and bottom of the glass.
