PI: Prof. Stefan Wabnitz

S. Wabnitz obtained the Laurea Degree in Electronics Engineering from Sapienza University of Rome in 1982, the MS in Electrical Engineering from Caltech in 1983, and the PhD in Applied Electromagnetism from the Italian Ministry of Education in 1988. He was with the Ugo Bordoni Foundation between 1985 and 1996. In 1996 he became full professor in Physics at the University of Burgundy in Dijon, France. Between 1999 and 2003 he was with Alcatel Research and Innovation Labs in France and with Xtera Communications in Texas. Since 2007 until 2018 he was full professor at the University of Brescia, Italy. Since November 2018 he is full professor in telecom at the Department of Information, Electronics and Telecom Engineering of Sapienza University of Rome. His research activities involve nonlinear propagation effects in optical communications and information processing devices. He is the author and co-author of over 700 international refereed papers, conference presentations, and book chapters. He is the Editor-in-Chief of Elsevier's Optical Fiber Technology, a Fellow member of the Optical Society of America, and senior member of IEEE-Photonics Society.

Staff Member Prof. Daniele Modotto

He received the Laurea degree (summa cum laude) in Electronic Engineering and the Ph.D. degree in Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering from the Università di Padova, in 1996 and 2000 respectively. From 2000 to 2001 he was with the Department of Electronics and Electrical Engineering, University of Glasgow, where he was involved in nonlinear wavelength conversion modelling. Since 2001 he has been working at the Università di Brescia, where in 2014 he became Associate Professor, and in 2018 Full Professor of Electromagnetic Fields. Since 2012 he is the manager of the laboratory where the experimental activities of the Electromagnetic Fields and Photonics group are carried out. His current research interests include the design and experimental characterization of devices working in different bands of the electromagnetic spectrum: from innovative antennas for WiFi to semiconductor waveguides and microstructured optical fibers for nonlinear conversion in the visible and near-infrared wavelength ranges. He is co-author of more than 60 articles in peer-reviewed journals.

Staff Member: Prof. Fabrizio Frezza

Fabrizio Frezza was born in Rome, Italy, on October 31, 1960. He received the “Laurea” (degree) “cum laude” in Electronic Engineering in 1986 and the Doctorate degree in Applied Electromagnetics and Electrophysical Sciences in 1991, both from “La Sapienza” University of Rome. In 1986, he joined the Department of Electronics of the same University, where he was Researcher from 1990 to 1998, temporary Professor of Electromagnetic Fields from 1994 to 1998, Associate Professor from 1998 to 2004, and he has been Full Professor of Electromagnetic Fields since 2005. His research activity has concerned guiding structures, antennas and resonators for microwaves and millimeter waves, numerical methods, scattering, optical propagation, plasma heating, anisotropic media, artificial materials and metamaterials, biomedical applications, cultural-heritage applications. Prof. Frezza is a Member of Sigma Xi and Senior Member of IEEE and OSA.

Staff Member: Prof. Umberto Minoni

Umberto Minoni received the Laurea Degree (M.Sc) in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial automation program, from the University of Brescia (Italy) in 1984 (cum laude). Since 1986 he worked as a Researcher on Electrical and electronic measurement at the same university. In 1999 he was appointed associate professor in Electrical and electronic measurements. He is currently at ìDipartimento di Ingegneria dellíInformazioneî of the University of Brescia. The research activities are in the field of electro-optical measurement with special attention to the industrial applications. The main techniques investigated include: optical interferometry based on single and multiple wavelengths, white-light interferometry, structured-light projection, confocal measurement, light scattering, real-time image processing, optical supercontinuum. He is author/co-author of more than 110 publications in peer-reviewed journals and/or conference proceedings.

Staff Member: Prof. Eugenio Del Re

E. Del Re (DelRe) earned his Laurea Degree in Physics from the University of Rome "La Sapienza" in 1995 and PhD in Physics from the Italian Ministry of Education in 1999. He was with the Ugo Bordoni Foundation between 1997 and 1999. From 2000 to 2002 he was with Pirelli Cavi e Sistemi, Milan, QPlus Networks Inc., Long Beach (CA), and Santel Networks Inc., Newark (CA). From 2002 to 2004 he was Fellow at the National Institute for Condensed Matter Physics (INFM) in Rome and in 2005 became Assistant Professor in Experimental Physics at the University of L'Aquila. In 2012 he was appointed to the Physics Department of the University of Rome "La Sapienza" where from 2018 he serves as an Associate Professor in Experimental Condensed Matter Physics. His research activities involve nonlinear optical propagation in disordered systems, out-of-equilibrium physics, and quantum optics. He is the author and co-author of over 150 international refereed papers, conference presentations, and book chapters, these including 3 Naure Photonics, 2 Nature Communications, and 13 Physical Review Letters. He is member of the Optical Society of America.

Staff Member: Prof. Fabio Baronio

Fabio Baronio was born in Brescia (Italy). In March 2001, he received the Laurea degree (BS, MS) in Electronic Engineering (summa cum laude) from the University of Brescia, Italy. In April 2005, he received the PhD degree in Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering from the University of Padua, Italy. From March 2005 to April 2015, he was Researcher in Electromagnetic Fields at the University of Brescia. From May 2015, he is Associate Professor in Electromagnetic Fields at the University of Brescia. In the periods 2007-2010 and 2010-2012, he was elected Delegate in the Board of Directors of the University of Brescia. In the period 2012-2015, he was elected Delegate of the Academic Senate of the University of Brescia. The scientific research activity of Fabio Baronio deals with Electromagnetism and Photonics. He has authored or co-authored more than 150 papers, conference contributions, books and patents. He coordinated projects funded by the Italian Ministry for Scientific Research and worked in the framework of projects granted by the European Community. In September 2010, he was awarded the Gaetano Latmiral Prize by the Italian Society of Electromagnetism. He is member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), of the Optical Society of America (OSA) and of the Italian Society of Electromagnetism (SIEM).

Postdoc: Dr. Alioune Niang

A. Niang received his B.S in physics at the University of Cheikh Anta Diop in Dakar, Senegal in 2008, and the M.S in Photonics, Signals and Imaging in 2009 and the PhD in Physics and photonics in 2014 from the University of Angers, France. Following his PhD, he has been a postdoctoral fellow with the University of Angers at the Laboratory of Photonics in Angers EA 4464 (2016-2017). Currently, he is a postdoctoral fellow working in the Electromagnetic Fields and Photonics group at the University of Brescia in Italy. His research activities concern mode-locked fiber lasers, non-linear polarisation, spatio-temporal dynamics in optical fibers, and fiber lasers. He is co-author of over 35 publications in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings.

PhD Student: Dr. Mesay Addisu

Mesay Addisu was born on 21st of December, 1985 in Kuyu (Ethiopia). He received his BSc (July 2009) in Electrical Engineering from Hawassa University (Ethiopia) and MSc (July 2017) in Communication Technologies and Multimedia from University of Brescia (Italy). He joined Ethio Telecom after the BSc graduation from November 2009 to September 2014 as a Junior Electrical Engineer and later IP Network Technician. Currently he is a PhD student at University of Brescia (Italy) in Telecommunication Engineering.

PhD Student: Raphaël Jauberteau

Raphaël Jauberteau was born on 5st of February, 1994 in Limoges, France. He received a Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree, both from Limoges University, in High Technology engineering: Optics and RF electronics. He is now a PhD student in a cotutelle program between University of Brescia (Italy) and University of Limoges (France) in Technology for Health.

Research Engineer: Dr. Rocco Crescenzi

Rocco Crescenzi received the degree in Aerospace Engineering at the ”Sapienza” University of Rome in 2002 and successively the Doctorate degree in Industrial Production Engineering. He works as mechanical engineer at the Nanostructure Laboratory in the Department of Information Engineering, Electronics and Telecommunication at ”Sapienza” University of Rome. He is employed in the Electronic Technological Laboratory as expert in plasma process (RIE, Sputtering and PECVD), thermal vapor deposition, photolithographic process, wet etching and electrochemical processes. His researches focus on the MEMS and his research group has developed several experimental setups for the mechanical characterization of the micro and nanostructured materials. His designing interests regard the finite element modeling, in particular the modeling of micro-electromechanical-system (MEMS). He supports the MEMS course at the same University since 2004.

Research Associate: Dr. Fabio Mangini

Fabio Mangini received Bachelor's degree in Clinical Engineering in 2005 and the Master degree in Biomedical Engineer “cum laude” from "La Sapienza" University of Rome, Italy in 2008. He received the Ph.D. in Electromagnetism from the Department of Information Engineering, Electronics and Telecommunications, in the same University in 2014. In June 2014 and in May 2015 he won the prize “Young Scientist Award” for URSI (International Union of Radio Science), in January 2017 he won the “PhD ITalents” prize, and in October 2018 won the “Marabelli prize”. From 2009 till 2015 he worked with the Laboratory of Electromagnetic Fields II of “La Sapienza University of Rome”. His research activity has concerned guiding structures, numerical methods, theoretical scattering models, optical propagation, anisotropic media, and metamaterials, biomedical applications, cultural-heritage applications. Since April 2019 he is a researcher working in the Electromagnetic Fields and Photonics group at the University of Brescia.

Postdoc: Dr. Mario Zitelli

M. Zitelli obtained the Laurea Degree in Electronics Engineering and the PhD in Applied Electromagnetism from Sapienza University of Rome in 1995 and 1999 respectively. From 1997 to 1999 he was with Ugo Bordoni Foundation (FUB); since 1999 he has worked as a senior researcher and R&D manager in several telecom companies: Pirelli Submarine Telecom Systems (Milan, Italy), QPlus Networks Inc. (Long Beach, CA), Santel Networks Inc. (Fremont, CA), CNET France-Telecom (Lannion, France), TelCon (Rome, Italy), OCEM Airfield Technology (Valsamoggia, Italy), Leonardo (Pomezia, Rome), Selex System Integrations (Overland Park, Kansas, USA), Argos Ingegneria (Rome, Italy), Photoneco ltd (London, UK). His research activities include nonlinear fiber transmission, spatial nonlinear effects, advanced optical modulation formats, photometry. He is author/co-author of over 30 international refereed papers and conference presentations, 5 international patents, and was member/co-director of 5 research projects from EU, NATO, FILAS.

MCSA Fellow: Dr. Vladimir Kalashnikov

Vladimir Kalashnikov was born in Minsk, Belarus, in 1965. He received an M.Sc. degree in physics and mathematics in 1989 and a Ph.D. degree in laser physics in 1992 from Belorussian State University, Minsk, for theoretical work on mode-locked solid-state lasers. He was with the Institute for Applied Physics Problems (Minsk) from 1989 to 1993 as a Junior and then Senior Researcher. During 1993–-1996, he held a Scientific Secretary position at the International Laser Center, Belorussian Polytechnic Academy. In 1996, he was a Visiting Scientist at the Institute for Laser- and Plasmophysics, University of Essen, Germany. From 1996, he was a Head of the Laser Optics Laboratory, International Laser Center, Belarus, and an Associate Professor at the Instrument-Industry Department, Belorussian Polytechnic Academy. In 2001, he joined the Photonics Institute, Technical University of Vienna, Austria, as a Lise Meitner Fellow, where he stayed till 2019 with the two years interruption as a Marie Curie Fellow at the Aston University (Birmingham, UK) as well as the short-term fellowships at the Max-Planck Institute for Quantum Optics (Garching, Germany), the Novosibirsk University (Russia), and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. At this moment, he is a Marie Curie Fellow at the Sapienza University of Rome. His research interests include ultrafast nonlinear optics, laser physics, high-speed telecommunication, and theory of dissipative solitons. He is the author and co-author of more than 350 publications.

Postdoc: Dr. Mario Ferraro

Mario Ferraro received the Bachelor's degree in Physics “cum laude and special mention to the curriculum" in 2013 from University of Calabria (Italy) and the Master degree in Physics “cum laude” in 2015 from "La Sapienza" University of Rome (Italy). He has been awarded as excellent graduated student of "La Sapienza" University of Rome in 2016 and he received the Ph.D. in Physics in 2019 from the University of Côte d'Azur in Nice (France). His research activity has concerned nonlinear optics in nanodisordered media as well as semiconductor-based hyperbolic metameterials. Since January 2020 he is a postdoctoral fellow at the Engineering department of "La Sapienza" University of Rome working on ultrafast nonlinear phenomena in multimode optical fibers.
