Charter Enrichment Options
As well as your academic subjects, at Cowes Sixth Form we provide you with wider educational enrichment, designed to help you towards a fulfilling and successful future.
During year 12 you will choose one of the following charter options all designed to benefit your future career, UCAS study or personal life skills. This is a mandatory part of your course and your attendance and participation will be reflected in your UCAS reference and report. The options process will be conducted be email during the first week of the academic year.
You need to give 3 preferences.
EPQ, Core Maths, Young Enterprise and Sports Leaders will last all year, for others you can change each term to give you the chance to gain wider experience.
Option choices:
Online futures and finances (Mrs Lewis)
This course will be computer-based and cover a wide range of essential skills including IT skills, managing your finances and the option to complete online courses in a vast range of subjects that will enhance your UCAS application and CV.
Young Enterprise (External business advisor – Mrs Lewis supervising)
An exciting opportunity to work in a team with an advisor from a local business to develop practical business skills and create and develop your own business. You will make decisions about your business, manage your finances and sell to the public, gaining practical business experience and key skills. A fabulous enhancement to your personal statement.
Community Action (Ms Crane)
This course will be based around social action giving you the chance to make a positive difference to others/ the environment initially within the school community and then in the wider community. It will lead you from group work to independent volunteering, something universities and employers will greatly value.
The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) (Mrs Cody and Mrs Stannard)
The EPQ is a single piece of work of your choosing involving planning, preparation, research and independent work. You plan your own topic which goes beyond your A Level subjects. Your final project is either an extended essay or an artefact (something you have created or performed) with a report. It is worth 50% of an A Level so gives you extra UCAS points. An EPQ can get you a lower university offer, a more impressive personal statement and teaches you essential university study skills such as researching and referencing. Most importantly, it is a brilliant opportunity to independently study something of your own choice that genuinely interests and inspires you.
Public speaking for success (Mr Hetherington)
This course will involve active participation and public speaking, allowing you to develop your confidence and interview skills for jobs and university. The first term will involve preparing for a mock trial with various roles in a legal courtroom drama. The second term will include a Model United Nations event. In the third term students will be allowed to choose and plan their own dramatic project. We hope to include time for improvisation and other drama-based activities. Essential for those with an interest in a career in law or politics.
Book group and blog (Student led – Ms White supervising)
A student-led session which will allowing you to develop your literacy skills through a book group and give you the option to write creatively for a school blog. You will choose the books you read and have freedom to write creatively or report on topics that interest you. Great for anyone considering a arts-based university course or if you love reading or writing creatively.
Higher Sports Leaders Level 3 (Mr Milligan)
Higher Sports Leaders offers learners the chance to develop leadership skills in a sports setting. Transferable leadership skills are highly sought after in any industry and will strengthen any students' future careers prospects. Students will learn how to effectively lead small groups, how to plan engaging sports leadership or coaching sessions, and how to adapt their sessions to meet the needs of the individuals in their group. During the course, learners will volunteer in the local community; leading sports sessions in local sports clubs, school and organisations to a total of 12 hours. Additionally, this course carries 16 UCAS points making in an outstanding choice to compliment a UCAS application.
Core Maths (Ms Wester)
Studying Core Maths helps you develop your quantitative and problem-solving skills. It has been specifically designed with employers, universities and professional bodies to increase your employability and likelihood of getting an apprenticeship.
