1.5 Mentor Training

Segmenting Words, Vowels and Making Words, Sight Words, and “Calling in Sick” Learning Packet

This packet continues with activities related to the five areas of language learning. The activity sheets that follow provide instructions for working on each of these areas.

It may take more than one session to get through these sheets. It is more important that a little is done in each area each time than working through a sheet before going on to the next one. Packet is attached at end of this page.

  • Phonemic Awareness: # 4 Segmenting Words in a Sentence.

Mentee will listen for and clap once for each separate word in a mentor-dictated sentence.

  • Phonics: Set # 4 (vowels) - a, e, i, o, u + Making CVC Words

Mentor cuts the letter sets apart according to each vowel row.

Mentor places the letters in 5 separate snack-size ziplock baggies, one for each vowel.

Mentee arranges the letters to create mentor-dictated 3-letter words. (Consonant/Vowel/ Consonant pattern)

  • Vocabulary: Teach/reteach/review words identified previously by following instructions on the “How to Teach Sight Words” instruction sheet with flashcards and mentee-generated sentences.

Mentee adds words to "My Personal Dictionary."

Mentor introduce the 95 most common nouns when appropriate.

Mentee practices reading the sight word phrases page to improve fluency.

  • Fluency and Comprehension: "Calling in Sick" worksheet before/during/after activities.

Depending on mentee's level of English reading proficiency, mentor may choose one of the following:

Mentor reads the passage to the mentee and discusses orally

Mentor reads the passage with the mentee (echo reading or choral reading)

The passage is read by mentee (i.e., mentee reads alone).
