Fluency - Reading Smoothly

Fluency is the ability to read words accurately and quickly.

Fluent readers recognize words and comprehend them simultaneously. Reading fluency is a critical factor necessary for reading comprehension. If individuals read out loud with speed, accuracy, and proper expression, they are more likely to comprehend and remember the material than if they read with difficulty and in an inefficient way.

Fluency and comprehension are closely related. Attached reading and activity sheets cover both of these areas they are at the end of this page.

Steps to Fluency

Read Aloud: "Read to Me"

Through a wide variety of high interest materials, the mentor models fluent reading, plus an appreciation for reading.

Read Along: "Read with Me"

Echo Reading. The mentor reads a phrase or sentence, and the mentee echoes the exact words, phrasing, and intonation.

Choral Reading. The mentor and mentee read the passage aloud together, pointing to the words as they are being read. Seeing and speaking should match. The mentor's voice should be slightly louder and slightly ahead of the mentee's.

Repeated Reading. After the mentor has read aloud a short passage, the mentee practices reading and rereading it independently until fluency is achieved..

Read Alone: "Let Me Read"

The mentee self-selects a text and practices reading it aloud until it can be read fluently. The mentee then reads the text to an "audience" (e.g., mentor, family members, friends, etc.).
