There is a general perception (or misconception) that online learning is not as effective as face to face learning. I totally disagree. Yes, the learning experience is inevitably different but it doesn't have to be boring or less engaging.

In fact, we can design an online session to be surprisingly intimate and immersive

However, it's easier said than done. It requires educators to have a change in the mindset—changing their role from sage on the stage to being a learning designer

Not only they have to acquire new skillset but to master it and feel very comfortable using various online activities during the online class. Moreover, educators have to prepare their own toolbox so that they are ever ready to use the right tools for the right purposes.

Effective online teaching often requires more planning and more overall effort than traditional classroom teaching of the same material.

Effective online learning would also require students to have a different mindset and skill set as well. They have to be self-directed or self-regulated learners. 

The module provides strategies for online practitioners who are looking for new ideas to enhance their online instruction and facilitation, providing a new framework to consider when designing and implementing online interaction, including online discussion.

Assalamualaikum wrt and hello everyone,

Dr. Abd Karim Alias is a former (retired) Professor of Food Technology at the School of Industrial Technology, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and the former Director of the Centre for Development of Academic Excellence. He has over 28 years of teaching experience at USM (since 1994) and has held several administrative positions, including Deputy Dean and Director of CDAE. He has also been a Senate member for many years and served as the Senate representative on the university's Board of Governors. Currently, he is a Principal Fellow at UNITEN.
