In this class, we will work together to analyze and critically think about rhetoric through the art of Literature. Language has tremendous power, and those of us who can recognize and employ that power are often the most successful.
As someone who loves reading and writing, I am excited to take on this journey with all of you. Remember, this classroom is one of exchange, and we will be sharing and learning from one another, so I expect that we all be active and respectful participants in our online classroom.
English 124: Develop critical thinking, reading and writing skills beyond the level achieved in ENGL 120.
Focuses on the development of logical reasoning and analytical and argumentative writing skills.
English 124 is a 3-unit course designed to develop critical thinking, reading, and writing skills beyond the level achieved in English 120. Further, while the subject of 120 was general college writing, in this course you will learn to critically analyze literature and to write about literature using the appropriate analytical and argumentative writing skills.
Note: Since you have attained an acceptable level of proficiency in college writing prior to enrolling in English 124, I also assume that your command of English grammar and punctuation is at college level. While there will be some discussion of such matters as basic structure and essay writing strategy in this course, we will devote ourselves much more to problems of critical analysis. If you need extra help, please take advantage of the Reading and Writing Center.
You might need this course to graduate or transfer, but there is more to it than that. Many of you might think of writing as difficult or tedious, but being able to write clearly, express your ideas well, and critically analyze information will be valuable to you far beyond this course. In this class, we will look at the power of language and ideas. Rhetoric is powerful, and it can both empower us and fool us. Being able to recognize effective arguments and point out false or illogical ones will make you a better critical thinker and a better citizen.
