NOTES

This first page covers some of the basics of ASL. We focus on the do's and don't s of ASL. On this page We look at ABC's and basic Numbers. W-H questions are also introduced on this page as well, looking at Facial expression, structure and practice sentences.

Class notes :

Things to think about: YES and NO questions always have eyebrows raised. WH? questions like " who, what, where" eyebrows are down.

Topic Comment structure: Always put the topic of the sentence first then the comment.

Example: (English. I bought a bike.) (ASL. Bike + I buy)

Non-Manual Signals: non-manual signals are yes and no head shakes and nods that support your sentences.

Example: ( English.I don't like cold weather.) (ASL. Cold weather+ I+ like [negative head shake with sign (like) to show don't)

Possessives: Whenever you are using a possessive such as yours or mine always use the palm facing your target.

Example: That is your book. The palm is facing the person you are giving ownership too.



This video looks at some of the basic rules for signing. Things you should be aware of such as which hand should you sign with. Where yous signing space is located. Space for finger spelling. What you should look at when someone signs. Why you need to be precise when you sign and the importance of facial expression.

This video is the basics if The ASL ABC's. it focuses on proper hand position and where the fingers go and basic hand placement. Towards the end of the video i focus on K and P proper finger placement and proper hand placement for the letters.

This video focuses on the basics of asking W-H questions. The video goes through the various W-H words like who? what? Where? When?Why? How? and Which? I also discuss proper word order and the importance of the W-H facial expression. I go through some basic W-H question to practice with.

This video take a look at Yes- No questions and the proper facial expression associated with them. I will Discuss how facial expression is used with such question and why it is important to use facial expression with such questions. I will also do some practice examples you can sign along with.

This video takes a look at the basics of closing signals. Why you need them in your conversation and what their purpose is. I will discuss the different kinds of closing signals associated with W-H and Yes -No questions as well as how to use a closing signal in a reply of statement.

This video focuses on the five parameters of ASL or five areas you need to be aware of when signing. These are areas that can become pitfalls for new signers. The five areas discussed are 1. Handshape 2.Palm Orientation 3. Location 4. Movement 5. Non-Manual Signals.
