Promoting a culture of risk means sharing knowledge of past, present and potential hazards with everyone in a given area, with the aim of anticipating and preventing crises. In regions that are particularly exposed to disasters, effective risk management relies heavily on education and training, helping to strengthen the ability of communities to face threats. This approach includes education and training not only in school settings, but also within grassroots community-based organisations and across wider civil society.
To support this effort, a methodological guide and a toolkit on risk education have been designed, along with educational content tailored to the target audience.
The methodological guide aims to propose a standardised approach for developing and implementing awareness-raising and/or education projects on natural and climate-related hazards in Small Island Developing States. It promotes approaches, best practices and pedagogical tools to facilitate disaster risk education for the general public, as well as in school and extracurricular settings.
How do you prepare for it?
This toolkit is structured based on the methodological guide for developing and implementing a disaster risk awareness and/or education project. The toolkit is interactive and comprises a collection of technical guides and educational tools, designed to enable disaster risk reduction project leaders to easily access a variety of resources for disaster risk awareness and education.
Integrating educational content into learning is crucial for disaster risk management. Such content helps raise awareness among learners from an early age about potential hazards and preventive behaviours, contributing to the development of a lasting culture of risk.
In this approach, we offer two types of educational content focused on the educational realm.
DIn this teacher/facilitator booklet, you will find training tools adapted for primary and secondary education.
In this student booklet, you will find awareness-raising booklets, exercise books and comic strips to support learning.
