Locum shifts are essentially the same as regular shifts. You are expected to do the same tasks, follow the same procedures and be part of the team. You must be professional and show our Trust and ED's values.
If you book a Locum shift, we'd like to ask you to please honour the contract and arrive at the Department on time. Cancellations, especially with short notice (less than two days), jeopardize the department and patient safety. If you cancel your shift without a good reason, or if it happens regularly, we shall not book you anymore.
If you cancel a shift within 24 hours, you cannot work another Locum shift for a week. Previously booked shifts will be cancelled.
If, for any reason, you are late from the shift, please call the department (Bleep 791) and let us know so we can stop looking for you.
Please let the EDIC (shop floor leader senior / consultant) know if you need to stay longer to finish a task. He/she will sign your timesheet with the extra time added and signed.
Upon arrival to your shift, see the EDIC (Consultant) and report for duty ("check-in"). Please ask where you should be placed and what tasks you are delegated.
Before finishing and leaving your shift:
Ensure all your patients' documentation is completed and signed.
All handovers have been documented, and the clinician's name you handed the patient over to has been registered on the Launchpoint screen.
Say "goodbye" to the EDIC ("check-out") and upload your Timesheet to the EOL system. If your duties were longer than the original shift, you can edit the times on the timesheet page on EOL, but you must get a signature from the EDIC to prove the need for your extended hours.
Before commencing your first shift, you must have all the induction information.
Prospective candidates who express interest in undertaking locum shifts with us must formally register with our Staffing Bank and ensure integration into the Payroll system. You must meet the minimum competency standards in Emergency Medicine in line with the responsibilities associated with the locum role sought. Additionally, candidates must possess the legal right to employment within the UK.
For individuals not currently employed by Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust (SASH), supplementary verification processes, including DBS checks and Occupational Health assessments will be carried out.
Please forward an updated CV to Mr. Craig Prentice and Dr Brian Dalley. and a cover letter outlining your intent and readiness to undertake locum duties at specified levels (SHO, SpR/Consultant). After the evaluation of these documents, our team will make contact to outline the subsequent phases of the registration process.
You must be agreed by ED to work in the department, and your grade must be agreed
You must be registered with Employee Online (EOL) to book shifts. This can be done by emailing Craig Prentice (c.prentice@nhs.net)
Available locum shifts are shown on the live rota as LOCUM, which is bookable on EOL.
Go to EOL and ‘Express an Interest’ on the shifts you would like to book
The rota team will review these shifts frequently, and if you are approved to work the shift, you will get an email from the system
Please note shifts marked VACANT are unavailable unless they are within two weeks of the shift date. In this case, please email Craig Prentice for booking
Any very last minute (within 4 days of the shift) locum shifts will be advertised on the ED Locum WhatsApp group and via the locum office
Should you see any very last-minute LOCUM or VACANT shifts on the live rota that you want to work, please email Craig Prentice
