Consultants (RCEM Tier 5)
there is a duty consultant on the shop floor between 0800-2400. His primary responsibility is to provide constant supervision and support for the clinical team and ensure the patients' safe and constant flow throughout the ED.
The CDU Consultant covers the CDU and the ED Review Clinic between 0800-1600. The ED Support Consultant (Mo: 1600-2000, Tue-Fri: 0800-1600) provides clinical support on the shop floor.
Senior clinicians: Doctors and Practitioners (RCEM Tier 3 and 4)
Senior Registrars (ST4 and above - RCEM Tier 4) cover the department 24/7. They can lead life support teams, trauma call teams and support juniors as necessary. A senior registrar leads the department during the night shifts (2400-0800), with the consultant available for advice.
Junior registrars (RCEM Tier 3) are seeing patients under the supervision of a consultant. Advanced Care Practitioners (ACP) are also in this tier and enjoy the independent practitioners' privileges while benefiting from consultant support whenever necessary.
Emergency Nurse Practitioners (ENP)
Our highly trained and experienced ENPs run the "minors" side almost entirely independently, seeing minor injuries and illnesses and using consultant support only when necessary.
Resident and Trainee doctors and clinicians (RCEM Tier 2)
Trainee doctors (FY2, ST1-2), trainee ACPs and Physician Associates (PA) see the emergency patients and enjoy the direct support of the duty consultant and senior registrars for each case. This is an excellent learning environment for them while ensuring safety and efficiency.
GP service in the ED
Since 2017 we have established a GP service within the ED. Each day from 10:00 - 22:00, qualified GPs are available to see patients who would better be cared for within the primary care rather than in an Emergency Department.
Nursing staff
Clinical work is lead by the Nurse in Charge and supported by a Deputy Nurse in Charge 24/7. The qualified nursing staff runs the triage, the RAT (Rapid assessment), CDU and, of course, all patient areas with dedication and professionalism.
Allied Health Care professionals
One of the most successful therapy teams in the country with physiotherapists and oc.health professionals support early discharges whenever possible.
We are also very fortunate to have 24/7 psychiatric liaison service in ED as well.
Our close cooperation with radiology (CT scanner in the ED) and the rest of the diagnostic services is exemplary.
We provide emergency care for about 150.000 patients a year, about 350 - 420 patients a day, including around 100-120 ambulance admissions.
We are a Trauma Unit and see about 8-12 potentially seriously injured patients daily utilising a two-tiered trauma call system. The most severe cases are stabilised and transferred to tertiary centres, but many are managed in-house.
We have dedicated areas for minors, majors, resuscitation and paediatric emergency. Our integrated GP services help patients who are better managed within primary care.
8-bed CDU (Clinical Decision Unit) provides observational medicine and facilitates early discharge when appropriate. We receive excellent background support from the physiotherapy, occupational health, social care and psychiatric liaison teams.
