Networking

First Get Organized

As you ramp up your networking efforts and apply for jobs you need to keep track of what you've do so that you can follow up. The Contact Log is a job search workbook on Excel that you can use to keep track of network contacts, events, applications, interviews and recruiters. Download the Contact Log from the Resources tab/resource files.

Purpose & Types of Networking

The goal of networking is not to get a job, rather to share information. Professionals should be networking all the time with a "pay it forward" philosophy. Begin with the people who know you best. As you expand your network ask for referrals and sooner or later you will connect with a hiring manager. Networking takes several forms and each one complements the other two.

  1. Informal Group networking - at professional or social events to make new connections
  2. Formal 1:1 meetings with referrals - planned and purposeful. This is the BEST type of networking. See articles below for practical tips
  3. Online networking - Use LinkedIn.com

Networking begins with people you know. As you pursue your own search bear in mind the goals of others and pay it forward. Get to know those with common interests but also be on the lookout for jobs that may be right for others.

Greenville Group Networking

For online and in person networking go to Connect Greenville on Facebook and request to join the group. Many events are free but you may need to register in advance. For example, Tech After 5 meets monthly in Greenville and is free for job seekers. While primarily for IT these events are good networking opportunities for other professionals.

Telling Your Story

For networking success be sure you have first determined your career objective. Know who you are, how you add value and what you aim to do next. Next, prepare and rehearse your 30 Second Commercial so that you can clearly and concisely answer the question "Tell me about yourself." The 30 Second Commercial provides a simple format. Write yours down and practice it out loud with a friend so you can share your story in a concise and compelling manner. Tip: Ask the other person to tell you about themselves. Make it conversational.
