Description:
When people first enter an Empathy Circle, literal or word-for-word reflection is a wonderful, grounding place to start. It establishes safety and ensures the speaker is heard accurately. However, an Empathy Circle has the potential to go much deeper than what is sometimes called "Parroting".
(Parroting is the act of repeating another person’s words or actions without independent thought, comprehension, or original intent. While it is often viewed as thoughtless repetition, it can also be deliberately utilized as a constructive technique in communication, psychology, and childhood development )
This 2.5-hour mastery workshop is designed for practitioners who want to move beyond simple mirroring and transition into Deep Active Empathic Listening and authentic, vulnerable speaking. You will learn how to listen for the unsaid—the underlying emotions, core values, and felt senses—and how to speak from a place of deeper presence. By shifting from literal repetition to resonant reflection, we unlock the true transformative power of the Empathy Circle.
The Levels of Listening: Transitioning from tracking (the "what") to emotional and somatic tracking (the "essence").
Embodied Expression: How speakers can slow down, shift away from abstract analysis or storytelling, and articulate their immediate felt sense, desires, values and emotions.
Sensing the Core: How to use basic empathy to directly sense into the speaker’s world and reflect back their core meaning and feelings without shifting the focus to yourself.
Part 1: Grounding & The Evolution of Reflection (30 mins)
Welcome & Intention Setting (10 mins): Honoring the baseline of literal reflection while framing the invitation to go deeper.
Interactive Presentation (20 mins): Exploring the spectrum of Active Listening. Contrast a "word-for-word" reflection with a "deep essence" reflection using live, brief demonstrations.
Part 2: Skill-Building Exercises (40 mins)
Exercise 1: Mining for Gold (20 mins): A structured practice in pairs. One person speaks; the listener practices filtering out the "story noise" to reflect only the core emotion or core value being expressed.
Exercise 2: Speaking from the Felt Sense (20 mins): Exercises to help speakers slow down, connect with their immediate physical and emotional presence, and articulate what is alive for them in the moment.
Break (10 mins)
Part 3: The Deepened Empathy Circle (50 mins)
The Practice: Participants break into small Empathy Circles with a specific mandate: Prioritize tracking the deeper meaning, feelings, and essence of the speaker.
Facilitators will cycle through rooms to offer gentle guidance, encouraging Active Listeners to capture the emotional undertone rather than just repeating the vocabulary.
Part 4: Integration, Harvest & Closing (20 mins)
Group Debrief: What did it feel like to receive a deeper reflection? What blocks did we encounter trying to offer them?
Closing Circle: A brief, final round of reflections on how to carry this deepened presence forward into daily life and future Empathy Circles.
This workshop is ideal for experienced Empathy Circle participants, facilitators, and anyone looking to elevate their communication, bridge divides, and foster profound psychological safety in their personal or professional relationships.
Note on Terminology: This training focuses on Active Empathic Listening—the practice of actively staying present and checking your understanding of the speaker's world—ensuring the dialogue remains entirely centered on the speaker's unique experience.
