The Fundamental Proposition
Two things fill the mind with ever new and increasing admiration and awe, the more often and steadily we reflect upon them: the starry heavens above me and the moral law within me.
However, in the present state of our civil association, we observe that the moral law is obscured by the "unsocial sociability" of man. Individuals are driven by pathological inclinations—anger, bias, and egoism—which prevent them from treating others as ends in themselves.
To remedy this, we present the Empathy Circle. It is not merely a tool, but a practical necessity, providing the a priori conditions under which a true community of rational beings becomes possible.
The Four Categories of Benefit
We may deduce the benefits of this practice according to the following principles of practical reason:
1. The Autonomy of Will over Passion (De-escalation)
Inclination is blind and slavish; reason alone is free. When a subject acts from anger, they are driven by external causes. The Empathy Circle imposes a Categorical Imperative: You must reflect before you react. This structure forces the subject to suspend their pathological passions (anger, defense) and submit to the discipline of understanding. It elevates the participant from a state of raw nature to a state of moral autonomy.
2. The Public Use of Reason (Collective Innovation)
Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-incurred immaturity. Immaturity is the inability to use one's understanding without guidance from another. The Empathy Circle facilitates the Public Use of Reason. By systematically listening to all voices, we escape the narrow confines of private judgment and achieve an "enlarged mentality" (erweiterte Denkungsart). Only through this universal exchange can objective solutions to complex problems be synthesized.
3. The Condition of Possibility for Discourse (Constructive Dialogue)
For communication to have any objective validity, the concepts of the speaker must be congruent with the understanding of the listener. The practice of "active mirroring" ensures this congruency. It acts as a transcendental schema, bridging the gap between two isolated minds. Without this verification, dialogue is merely "noise" and lacks the dignity of human communication.
4. The Realization of the Kingdom of Ends (Social Cohesion)
Act in such a way that you treat humanity, whether in your own person or in the person of any other, never merely as a means to an end, but always at the same time as an end. The Empathy Circle is the practical application of this law. By giving the other one's full attention, one honors their dignity as a rational being. It transforms a chaotic aggregate of individuals into a systematic union of different rational beings under common laws—a Kingdom of Ends.
The Moral Duty of Support
It is therefore not a matter of mere preference, but of duty, to support this work. To fund and implement the Empathy Circle is to will the means necessary for a moral society.
A rational agent who wills the end (social peace) must also will the means (the practice of empathy). Let us, therefore, establish this practice as a universal law for our organizations.
Rationality requires that we listen.
