Subject: The Practice of the Empathy Circle as Established by Edwin Rutsch
The Principle
The Master said, "If names be not correct, language is not in accordance with the truth of things. If language be not in accordance with the truth of things, affairs cannot be carried on to success."
In our current era, we observe a great disorder under the heavens. Men speak, but their words do not reach the hearts of others. The ties between neighbor and neighbor are frayed, and the rituals of civil discourse are forgotten. To govern a state, or to lead a community, one must first establish order in communication.
We present the Empathy Circle, a structured observance developed by Edwin Rutsch. It is a necessary Ritual (Li) for our times, designed to restore respect and clarify the relations between people through the discipline of listening.
The Four Pillars of the Practice
Just as a table stands upon four legs, so too does a harmonious society rest upon four virtues cultivated by this practice:
1. The Restoration of Ritual (Order and De-escalation)
Without the rules of propriety (Li), speech becomes shouting. The Empathy Circle imposes a noble constraint: one speaks, another reflects. This structure is a ritual that cools the passions. When a man knows he will be heard, his anger subsides, and he returns to a state of calm. It transforms the chaotic mob into a respectful assembly.
2. The Cultivation of Wisdom (Collective Innovation)
The Master said, "When I walk along with two others, they may serve me as my teachers." In the Empathy Circle, the superior man (Junzi) listens to the humble and the exalted alike. By gathering the thoughts of the many, true wisdom (Zhi) is revealed. Problems that confound the solitary mind are solved when the community engages in deep deliberation.
3. The Rectification of Names (Constructive Dialogue)
To speak without ensuring understanding is to sow confusion. This practice ensures that words match their meaning. The listener repeats the speaker's sentiment until it is acknowledged as true. Thus, errors are corrected before they take root. It trains the mind to value accuracy over victory, and harmony over contention.
4. The Root of Benevolence (Social Cohesion)
The Master said, "Now the man of perfect virtue, wishing to be established himself, seeks also to establish others." This practice builds the foundation of Benevolence (Ren). It bridges the divide between opponent and friend. It reminds us that within the Four Seas, all men are brothers. It weaves the disparate threads of society back into a seamless garment of trust.
The Mandate
To adopt the Empathy Circle is to govern with virtue rather than force. It is efficient, requiring only the sincerity of its participants, yet its yield is a harvest of peace.
We invite the leaders and stewards of this age to champion this practice. By doing so, you do not merely fund a project; you uphold the Way (Dao). You bring order to chaos, creating a society where the near are happy and the distant are attracted.
Is Benevolence far away? I wish to be Benevolent, and lo! Benevolence is at hand.
