I made a cat spoon.
How do you make a spoon in the shape of a cat? Why would you make a spoon in the shape of a cat? Is it possible to make a spoon in the shape of a cat?
If these are questions that you have ever asked yourself (unlikely), I am the person you can go to for the answers. For my first woodworking project ever, I was assigned to transform a plain old block of wood into a spoon. And, for some reason, I decided that I wanted my spoon to look like a cat. So, that’s what I did!
Progress pictures!
I don't have too many photos of the process, but here's how it went down: I began the way that most art projects begin - with a sketch. I needed to get my idea onto paper, to visualize and design what I wanted my spoon to look like. Then, I glued my design onto the wood and cut out the general shapes. Lastly, I sanded it down until I was happy with the results.
The finished product!
I am very happy with how this project turned out. However, if I were to redo this from the beginning, there are a few things that I would do differently. First off, I would choose a darker piece of wood. I did not put much thought into the color or grain pattern at the beginning of the school year because of very limited knowledge, which has now improved. I would also make the bowl of my spoon less wide. Because of how wide my bowl is, the sides of my spoon are quite thin, and at times I was nervous that I would end up sanding off the entire side of the cat’s body. Lastly, I would buff it to give it a more shiny, finished look.
