My second project in Woodworking was a cutting board.
Designing the board
For this project, I decided that I wanted something simple and cute. I began by designing my board on Onshape to get a 3-D model of what the final result should look like. Then, I went on Canva and designed a logo to be laser engraved onto the board. I ended up choosing the rectangular design because a rectangle is easier to work with and gives the board a more traditional look.
Progress...
Here are some progress photos. Honestly, for a flat, rectangular piece of wood, this took a lot more time and knowledge than I expected. This was the first time I’ve used the planer, orbital sander, scroll saw, hand planer, laser engraver, and my second time using the drill press, drum sander, and probably more that I can’t think of off the top of my head right now. The hardest part was definitely the heart in the corner. Though I did not get a photo of it, the first time that we tried laser engraving the heart, an entire chunk of my board got burnt and we had to cut and glue a new piece on it. No worries though! It’s alright though, as they say, “The comeback is always better than the setback.” It’s true!
Done!
Lo and behold… the final result! I really love how the different types of woods look together, especially after oiling.I think that the logo that I designed and the heart detail in the corner really go well together. If I were to redo this project, I would probably choose greater dimensions, because my board is a bit small for a cutting board. Overall, I am quite happy with this project and I will probably give it to my mom as a gift.
I made banana bread, so here are some bonus photos of my banana bread plated on the cutting board. :)
