When and Where: January 30th 2023 - February 19th 2023
Golden, CO
With the option to draw or paint during these weeks, I chose to paint. I have become more comfortable with charcoal drawing (because of the other classes I took) so I wanted to develop my painting skills. From 5 to 8 pm every Monday, 4 other people and I gathered in Andrea's studio to paint. Filled with ambient lighting and soft music paired with the soft scratches of paintbrushes and charcoal against boards, we had 3 focused hours to fully study the model.Â
Aside from the challenging perspectives, I uncomfortably painted my canvas with hesitant lines. Perspectives I painted were created and erased. Colors I mixed fell flat and didn't match the tones of the model. However, over the course of this class, I leaned into unpracticed techniques to develop my painting, perspective, and color-creating abilities.
Jan 30th: 3 hr
Note: Took this picture the night before I left to Korea; will update with a better photo when I return. I will also add a photo showing the colors I mixed myself on my pallet
Feb 6th and Feb 19th: 5 hr
Challenging both with capturing subject and color, this class pushed me past my comfort zone. In my other art, I usually avoid situations where I need to "make" the color pallet. Although I do like to incorporate color into my drawings, I normally select colors to use from a pastel or marker set. I began to push my color-creating abilities with Andrea in France but many of my paintings had the color range of a kid's Crayola set. Painting for this class posed the same challenge. For the Jan 30th class, Andrea mixed my skin tone colors; however, I mixed all my colors for the remaining two classes. Andrea suggested to pick random paint samples from Home Depot and to try to copy them--I'm planning to practice this when I return from Korea.
