The physical and virtual learning environments of students play important roles in effective classroom management plans. Rules, transitions, cueing, classroom procedures, and curriculum are some of the issues to keep in mind as part of the learning environment. This structure facilitates positive social interactions and supports learning.
If there are distractions in the learning environment such as infrastructure problems, peeling paint, no air conditioning during warm months, no heat during cold months, mold, bugs, mice, lack of supplies such as books and computers, etc. student learning and teacher effectiveness will suffer. Maintaining basic health and safety needs must be the main priority in all learning environments.
The fieldwork journal and photos below are examples of different learner-centered environments being used to encourage positive social interactions. The table number signs each had a different picture of an important person in history on them which I thought was a nice idea that made it easy to call on groups but I might have used pictures of popular books or authors instead.
I would add more signs to clearly display rules and expectations of students while they are in the library and at maker-spaces. To reduce the number of conflicts between students, I would also expand the maker-space materials and create a maker-space rotation chart for each class that ensures all students experience every maker station.
This was my very first classroom I organized in 2014 at the school district of Philadelphia for grades 2-4 small group instruction. It was used mainly for reading and math intervention. I taught science and social studies lessons here too.
The center table was used for instruction and group work. On one side of the room was a literacy word wall, on the opposite side was a math word wall with a computer station. In the back by the windows was a small library of books, math manipulatives, and a small group of desks where students could work together or independently.
For its purpose, this classroom worked well most of the time. At other times it would have been helpful to have a few more desks, chairs, and computers, or just a smaller room. There was always a lot of movement within all the empty space.
Ultimately, I would like to see smartboards and magnetized whiteboards installed in all classrooms. They are more engaging for students and much easier for teachers to use.
