For my career, I hope to be in an environment in which I use several technological advances to improve the lives of individuals with disabilities. I hope to either be an educator, or be involved in a nonprofit organization that is hands on in improving not only the quality of life for these individuals, but also allowing for them to have more access to opportunities and resources.
I would need technology such as laptop computers for several reasons. One main reason is that I would need it is for research. I will need to be able to bring my computer with me wherever I go, always having access to email so I can be in constant communication with my students and their families. With the innovation happening today, there is a new technology advances everyday. Without access to a computer I would be unable to research these advances and give those who I am working with the best experience possible. Other technology I would require is access to devices that are working with virtual reality. Virtual reality goggles are used to aid with the rehabilitation and aid for those with a wide array of disabilities. For example, the virtual reality goggles are used when working with those who are unable to walk, or are paralyzed, to simulate the feeling of movement. This could be as simple as walking down the street or as complex as the feeling of flying. These technological advances being made in virtual reality are pertinent in the rehabilitation for those with disabilities with their emotional health, mental health, and physical health. If I were to work in a classroom environment, I would need additional technology such as an interactive board or a Smart Board. To use the Smart Board, I will need a projector to share the information from my computer to the screen. With the use of this technology I would be able to create an environment in which I can have the students touching the board and being involved in activities instead of me speaking at them. With the use of a Smart Board I can create a better classroom dynamic in which I can get the students moving and to have them feel more apart of the lesson. Students with attention disabilities or hyperactive disabilities will benefit from this technology and be able to focus better and hopefully learn better in this environment.
In conclusion, I feel that technology will be something I cannot be without in whichever career path I choose. Without the use of technology, I will not only be unable to give those with disabilities I am helping the best of my work, but unable to give them same access to resources and opportunities that I could with technology.
