Minimum Standards for Embedded Tutors
○ Understands and embraces the model of embedded tutoring
○ Must have successfully taken the course in which they will be an embedded tutor or demonstrate equivalent content knowledge and shows ability to understand the student learning experience in the course
○ Demonstrates ability to follow tutoring best practices and work independently with indirect supervision
○ Completes embedded tutor training led by learning center professional (LCP)
○ Communicates with LCP to provide feedback
○ There should be sustained, continuous engagement across the majority of the course.
■ DURATION: The tutor should engage with students in the instructor-led space for at least 75% of the course duration (e.g. in a 16-week course, a minimum of 12 of the 16 weeks)
■ FREQUENCY: The tutor engages with students in the instructor-led space at least once every other week throughout the duration of the course
○ Provides opportunities for students to engage with tutoring outside the instructor-led space, whether with the embedded tutor or other Learning Center staff or tutors
Embedded Tutors DO NOT...
○ Co-design the course or introduce new material
■ Only supports information already delivered by the instructor; assists with review and interaction with material that has already been presented
○ Grade
○ Have access to students’ grades without students’ consent
○ Substitute, proctor, or act as a teaching assistant for class
○ Enforce classroom discipline
○ Work outside their scheduled hours (including, but not limited to, answering emails) without consent of the LCP
