This embedded tutoring knowledge hub is a collaborative and interdisciplinary network of learning assistance professionals in higher education dedicated to student success from all around the nation. If you're here to learn more about embedded tutoring models from our community, we're happy to point you in the right direction!

Our Shared Definition

Embedded tutoring is a form of academic support in which an embedded tutor actively and continually interacts with students in an instructor-led space throughout an entire term to clarify course concepts and motivate students’ participation and engagement. This model also offers students opportunities to participate in tutoring outside of class. The tutors are experienced with the course material and are trained to encourage effective learning. Embedded tutoring hinges on collaborative partnerships between tutors, instructors, and learning center professionals, thereby enhancing student-instructor connections and cultivating successful learning.

Disclaimer

This work is intended to define and describe the specific activity we refer to as embedded tutoring. We firmly believe that embedded tutoring can be done synchronously and asynchronously and in multiple modalities, including in-person, remote, and online. We believe there are many additional models of academic student support that are successful and beneficial to student learning. We honor and support these efforts by our colleagues and programs that do not meet the guidelines put forth by this group, as they also have numerous potential benefits to students, even if we would not classify these programs as embedded tutoring.
