My last visit to Volksrust was in 2021 during my Battlefield trip and I enjoyed this camp site on the Mahawane Dam. The resort is also referred to as the Mahawane Country Resort.
On leaving Tembe, the weather was overcast, cool and threatening rain. When I reached the tar road, it started raining on and off the whole way to Volksrust.
By the time I arrived at the Volksrust Caravan Park, the rain had stopped but the wind had picked up and it became very cold. At about 17h00 I decided to prepare my dinner before it became too dark. Luckily, I had a pre-cooked meal that I heated up and enjoyed with a glass of red wine.
There was one other visitor in the caravan park who was staying in a bungalow. He had a fire going and invited me over for a cup of coffee and the warmth of the fire. I spent about an hour chatting to him before heading back to my camp. He was working on a contract doing road markings on a number of rehabilitated tar roads in the area and Volksrust was a good central point for him to operate from.
