The competent teacher understands and uses appropriate formative and summative assessments for determining student needs, monitoring student progress, measuring student growth, and evaluating student outcomes. The teacher makes decisions driven by data about curricular and instructional effectiveness and adjusts practices to meet the needs of each student.
Rationale:
The test analysis project linked above challenged me as a student, but also as someone who is pursuing teaching as a career. I was able to practice my test-making skills as well as being capable of administering a summative assessment for the first time. While doing this project, I was able to use real-world data from my peers to compute scores as well as analyze the results firsthand.
The project focused on standard 7 of the Illinois Professional Teaching Standards which states, "The competent teacher understands and uses appropriate formative and summative assessments for determining student needs, monitoring student progress, measuring student growth, and evaluating student outcomes. The teacher makes decisions driven by data about curricular and instructional effectiveness and adjusts practices to meet the needs of each student."
I believe that this project relates to the standard because of the approach of administering a summative assessment and monitoring the student's progress and evaluating the outcomes. I was able to write a report on the data and explain the effectiveness and plan to adjust where needed.
Rationale: I associate this artifact with standard 7E where it states, "understands how to select, construct, and use assessment strategies and instruments for diagnosis and evaluation of learning and instruction." I believe this to be connected because IXL is equipped with many assets that allow teachers to customize lessons and skills to practice that will help students learn beyond the lesson itself.
