"Ryan slumped in relief as the door clicked shut behind Jacob, a minute relief, but one all the same. His heart still pounded in his chest, his mind spinning from his suspicion that he had only one stop to confirm."

Ryan's family was in the right place at the right time, being some of the few from Edreli to survive the attack, and escaping with all four members of their immediate family alive. Once on Earth, his family settled in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and adapted to a blended culture in their home between Edreli tradition and human practices. Here, they would process the shock of losing their home in a fairly stable home.
When Ryan was ten, however, his mom grew ill. Progressively getting weaker and losing her vision, they began to struggle more as they all pitched in to take care of her. It was at this time that a representative of the Academy found their family and the decision was made to move there in order for his mom to get treatment and for his dad to work in his field of Hecathian history by teaching there.
Intrigued by his new environment, Ryan sought as much information as he could find and began training as both a warrior, as is tradition, and a healer. Motivated by watching and caring for his ailing mom, he dedicated a lot of his time to mastering his growing healing abilities, catching the interest of older members of the community. Despite his young age and tendency to not take everything seriously, he was brought in as an official healer of the academy and recruited to the Observance defense program of the academy. In gaining support and through treatment, his mom's condition would stabilize, though she would be blind for the rest of her life.
Their family would be shattered when his older brother would go missing, an event that would be the first in a chain of disappearances within the academy that would continue for two years. While Ryan pushed forward, growing in his abilities and rising ranks in his Observance, his parents' relationship was cracking, and they would separate a year after his brother's disappearance. Instead, Ryan turned to his teammates for companionship, quickly becoming close with Jacob, with the two finding that they balanced each other out and influenced each other quite well.
When his team began to fall apart after Roselle's death and betrayal in their midst, Ryan remained in the background, largely uninvolved. He continued on, attempting to mend some of the tension between his teammates which went largely unappreciated. In the chaos, while his teammates were leaving or falling apart at the seams, he agreed to train Eleanor as a new team member. While he would stay relatively optimistic about their circumstances, he was still on edge, proceeding with a bit of caution as Jacob returned from his sudden six-month departure, ready to watch how it would play out for them all in the end.
