Elaine's life changed before she was even born, as her birth parents made the decision to give her up to a well known family. Her existence was a secret for the first couple weeks of her life as they went into hiding to spare her birth parents from the critical gaze of the Nirshorn people, until the birth of her assumed twin brother in Caldesaria associated her with parents Mesaiad and Maishear. Her birth parents would have no contact, and would be among the dead on the night of the attack.
As the wake of the attack cleared and Elaine grew older, the true nature of her relationship with her family had become less taboo, primarily due to the fact that the vast majority of Nirshorn had refused to abandon their homeland. However, many continued to assume her different appearance was only due to her genetic disorder, as she resembled her siblings enough to let it go. The one person who could not accept her as part of their family was Maishear. Already not known to be warm or fatherly, her father was cruel to her from the beginning, foregoing her in favor of his biological children. While she was close with her mother and her siblings, it didn't stop the rejection from becoming the foundation of her distant and hostile nature as she mimicked how her father treated her from a young age.
Her family relationship was the beginning. Albinism made her life difficult, as she struggled with vision problems, intense light sensitivity, and having to remain indoors to prevent sunburn. She regularly suffered from migraines caused by her photosensitivity, not helped by her tendency to push through pain as her main coping mechanism. Refusing to wear glasses due to their occupational hazard during combat, she opted to wear contacts, though her vision would remain slightly blurred, but they would allow her to pursue her dream of being in the observance system, starting at thirteen years old.
Joining the same team as her siblings was both a positive and negative experience, as it helped that they understood and embraced her, but it also perpetuated the sense of competition for validation she felt with them. As both of them had been involved in the observance before her, she felt like she was behind, falling in the lower ranks of the team while Amber led and Jacob was shortly behind. Motivated by her desire to be competent in her own right, she dedicated all of her free time to practice and improve. Despite this, her promotion would only happen once their team would fall apart at its seams, leaving only half of their members in their ranks, and the only teammate Elaine considered a friend dead.
Her sister had abandoned her, suddenly renouncing her family ties, and transferring teams without saying a word to Elaine. This alone would have caused her to struggle, as she had thought they were close, and Amber wouldn't even explain why she did it, but two of their teammates would go on to quit shortly after. Then, Roselle was killed, and Elaine crumbled further, hardly able to focus through the trial of their teammate. Jacob's decision to leave on a mission days after the execution was the final nail in the coffin, as she suffered the abandonment of both her siblings. While she had already been distant, she grew colder and secluded herself further from what remained of their team. The murder of her mother six months later would only riddle her with complete devastation, as her mother was the last person she felt she could rely on to not leave her behind. Feeling alone and at her lowest, her brother's sudden return and attempt to revive their team would not be as welcome as he assumed.
