Hello and welcome to my portfolio page!
My name is Elizabeth Zellner and I am from Albuquerque, New Mexico. I am currently a freshman at the University of New Mexico studying psychology and Spanish. Along with this double major, I will be getting a designation in honors from the UNM Honors College. I am planning on studying abroad in order expand my knowledge on how cultural differences can affect our psychology. Another reason I would like to study abroad is to continuously learn languages because I am interested in the psycholinguistics field. I hope to travel to places such as Spain, Argentina, Czech Republic, and various other place with a wide range of different cultures for me to explore and experience.
If I stay on the track I am currently on, I should be able to graduate in the Spring of 2023 and be able to move on to get my master’s degree in a psychology related field. This website was created to showcase some of my professional and technical writings. I am being given the opportunity to learn new modes of communication and several new software and resources that are available to me. There are rough drafts, final drafts, and reflections that clearly show growth and improvement. These can be found on the task bar or are listed here:
§ Project 1: Formal Inquires and Complaints
§ Project 2: Multimodal Technical Description and Instruction
§ Project 3: Recommendation Report
Additionally, here is the main page for my reflections:
§ SLOs: Student Learning Objectives
Finally, here is my final reflective memo:
In the class of ENGL 2210-016 Technical and Professional Communication, I have learned various forms of communication that are commonly used in the world today. In the first project, I learned how to organize three professional letters addressing different subjects and having different goals. Each of these letters taught me something different such as how to word something when it is coming directly from a company as seen in my response letter. The other two letters helped me to better understand what components would be needed in a complaint and inquiry letter. Things such as using specific language that is not overly complicated in order to clearly state my purpose and goal of the letter. I also learned how to utilize the website, Canva, to create each letter. This program as helped me in other classes, and I have also been able to use it to assist an organization I am a part of.
Project 2 is a set of technical instructions that I had to create. This specific project helped me to realize how important your audience is and how you have to accommodate them and their preferences. As seen in my project 2 revisions, I had to completely change my project due to the fact that my first rough draft was trying to cover too broad of a topic. Learning that a technical set of instructions has to be very specific will help me immensely throughout my future career. I also learned about how certain mediums that are used to present these ideas also rely on your target audience and the tone you would like to portray to them. In Media Lab 2, we were to create a radio commercial using a new software. I was not familiar with this in any way and was able to learn how to quickly create a commercial promoting my project 3 website.
The last project, project 3, consisted of a recommendation report that was to be sent to an organization of our choosing. I chose to focus on Soul Rio Church in their Christmas giving this year. Having to create a professional report was one of the most difficult tasks I had to do this year. I learned how to correctly research the information I need to obtain to help my church and how it needed to be presented in a professional manner. The skills that I have learned in this project are ones that will help me in any career choice I choose. I am now able to identify a specific problem and find feasible solutions to it through research and discussions with stakeholders within the organization or company. Additionally, I am able to compile all of this information into one report and present it to the leaders/stakeholders in a way that is not forceful, but my personal recommendation.
Over the course of this class, I have learned how to incorporate multimodal elements into my projects to make them clearer, have more information, and many other valuable elements. It has also become apparent of how essential the layout and design of the project must be such as pictures on the righthand side of the paper are where our eyes are drawn. The specific language that is used and when to use it is also something that I have learned throughout this course. Overall, this course has helped to develop the skills I will need in a professional work environment.
