- Print out late book reminders to hand to students who did not return their library books. I do this on an individual basis for a student who needs help remembering, or at the teacher's request.
- If you have a library assistant or volunteer, have them check in the class's books, then run a printout of current checkouts for the class during the lesson. Before the students check out books and leave, you'll be able to give their teacher a list of students with books that still need to be returned.
- Whenever I check out books to a student, I gently tell them what other books they still have out. If they can't remember the book, I show them a picture of the cover in Destiny, or I google an image of the cover for them to see. They suddenly remember the book after seeing the cover. Weekly
- Email class list of lost/damaged library books to teacher (also place a hard copy in each teacher's school mailbox...not all teachers keep up with email.) (Keisa Williams)
- I've found that sending overdue notices home every two weeks is just about right. It also prompts a massive return of books with the overdue slips tucked inside. If you can coordinate the overdue notices distribution so that they are included in the folders going home, that works best.
Whenever I do overdue notices, I send out an e-mail with instructions for teachers about when to distribute them. I also make note of which classes did not have any overdue books and give those teachers and classes a big shout-out in the e-mail, or in the morning announcements (Regina Hartley)
